Trevor Noah Asks Ocasio-Cortez: 'How Do You Pay for All These Ideas?'
Townhall.com ^ | July 27, 2018 | Lauratta Brown

Rising Democratic socialist star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained to Trevor Noah on “The Daily Show” Thursday how she planned to pay for the ideas that she campaigned on in her stunning primary defeat over fourth-ranking House Democrat Joe Crowley (NY).

After Ocasio-Cortez went through the main things she wants government to pay for, including Medicare for all and education, Noah brought up the more practical side of things.

“You always see people coming in with economic arguments, and they say, look, these numbers don’t really add up,” he argued. “You know, in order to get healthcare for everybody, this is what it would cost. That’s going to be troubling. Even if you reverse the Republican tax deal, that’s only going to make up 5% of what we need to pay for Medicare for all. How do you pay for education- how do you pay for all these ideas?”

Ocasio-Cortez responded first by saying she had “sat down with a Nobel Prize economist last week,” laughing, “I can't believe I can say that, it's really weird.”

A meeting with a Nobel Prize economist was likely warranted given that Ocasio-Cortez faced intense criticism for getting basic facts about the unemployment rate wrong in a PBS interview earlier this month. She later tried to walk back her remarks.

However, having met with this prize-winning economist, Ocasio-Cortez presented a plan for getting money for her proposals, arguing first for raising the corporate tax rate.

“One of the things that we saw is, if people pay their fair share,” she said, “if corporations and the ultra-wealthy -- for example, as Warren Buffett likes to say, if he paid as much as his secretary pays, 15 percent -- if he paid a 15 percent tax rate; if corporations paid -- if we reverse the tax bill, but raised our corporate tax rate to 28 percent, which is not even as high as it was before, if we do those two things and also close some of those loopholes, that's $2 trillion right there.”

“That's $2 trillion in ten years, and it's -- one of the wide estimates is that it's going to take $3 trillion to $4 trillion to transition us to 100 percent renewable energy economy,” she continued. “So we got $2 trillion from folks paying their fair share, which they were not paying before the Trump tax bill. They weren't -- like they weren't paying that before the Trump tax bill. If we get people to pay their fair share, that's $2 trillion in ten years.”

She then argued for implementing a carbon tax claiming that would make “a large amount of revenue.”

“Now, if we implement a carbon tax on top of that so that we can transition and financially incentivize people away from fossil fuels,” she said, “if we implement a carbon tax, that's an additional amount of a large amount of revenue that we can have.”

She concluded by calling for a “reprioritization” of funds away from defense spending.

“The last key, which is extremely, extremely important, is reprioritization,” she argued. “Just last year we gave the military a $700 billion budget increase, which they didn't even ask for! They're, like, we don't want another fighter jet! They're, like, don't give us another nuclear bomb, you know? They didn't even ask for it and we gave it to them. And so a lot of what we need to do reprioritize what we want accomplish as a nation.”

“That is a decision that requires political and moral courage from both parts of the aisle,” she emphasized.

> The interview was set up to make it look like he asked a tough question. The response was uncharacteristically perfect, succinct and rehearsed. <

You’re probably right. But the question was still tough enough that a stupid person could stumble, and look foolish. And Ocasio-Cortez sure did stumble around a bit. She sounds like a 6th grader.

OK, we implement a Carbon Tax..
Well, if we’re on 100% renewable energy where is the carbon coming from?
We have wind turbine and solar creating our electric grid. Electric autos .Where to get the carbon? Camp stoves? Exhaling?

The Seven Wonders of Socialism

1. Everybody is employed.
2. Although everybody is employed, nobody works
3. Although nobody works, everybody fulfills the plan.
4. Although everybody fulfills the plan, there are no goods.
5. Although there are no goods, everybody has everything.
6. Although everybody has everything, everybody steals.
7. Although everybody steals, nothing is ever missing.
8. Start again at number 1 and repeat

Laura Ingraham has aged pretty well. Judge Jeanine is 67, and looks pretty good. Just two, off the top of my head.

I would like to know WHO is paying for this poor immigrant from daBroncks to travel throughout the country spreading the ‘liberal Socialism message.
There was a time not all that long ago one would have chipped in too ‘help’ as her subject matter would have definitely drawn ‘normal’ people away from her & her ilk.

Not so sure today, these fools are growing in leaps and bounds so it is time to ‘crush’ the movement.

Remember ‘we’ used to scoff at all the ‘other parties’ in Presidential Elections but Ross Perot (and his GIANT SUCKING SOUND) proved one could sway an election with enough money and effort - HE got us Clinton basically because of Bush Sr and his NAFTA and immigration stance.

Recently the Libertarian candidate has knocked people out, Virginia for a good example when a Libertarian candidate backed with Texas(among others) money help get Terry McAullife to the Governors office even though the VIRGINIA LIBERTARIAN PARTY was telling all their candidate was a fraud... Then again if you don’t have the 100% backing of the MSM etal, it is very expensive to put that message off.

Also, the RNC was actively involved in ousting Cuccinelli the R as well as female Senate candidates in RI, CT & DE, and a Black female Congressional candidate in UT ALL who were replaced with WHITE MEN and not a peep from the womens groups.

Typical Demonic-rat. Never things people will change their behavior if they change the rules.

Remember when they asked the Congressional Budget Office: How much more they would bring in yearly if the tax were raised to include everything over $100,000 / year? And they came back with this astronomical number for per year surplus; only to be told: Yeah maybe the first year but after that No one would make over $100,000!

Folks....this woman is no more fit to be a congressperson then I am fit to eat Swiss cheese on the surface of the Earth’s Moon. It really is a joke when you look closely at her victory in the state of New York’s 14th Congressional District.

There are roughly 711,000 people in most USA CDs. The voter turnout in the recent Mid-Term, primary election for the 14thNYCD was the following (Final Results):
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - 15,897 votes
- Joe Crowley - 11, 761
- Total votes cast - 27,658

Registered voters in the 14thNYDC are roughly between 300,000-400,000 voters. As such the Primary voter participation was miserable...maybe ten percent at best. Thus MS, Ocasio-Cortez won her victory with about 5% of of the of the total voters registered to vote in the 14thNYCD....not a feat for the history books.

Facts, be known, The well known, Democrat liberal, 14thNYCD, Congressman, Joe Crowley, thought he was a God of some kind and was totally asleep at the wheel, and, he barely campaigned at all, as most Democrats usually do.

My point is...as absolute long shot Pubbie victory for this CD Seat is, it may be a bit worthwhile for the deadbeat Republicans in the 14thNYCD to at least look at besting the know-nothing Ms. Ocasio-Cortez in the 14thNYCD. You never know, unless you are in the game and try as hard as you can!!!

If she wants to get money from Warren Buffett, she needs to tax WEALTH, not INCOME. Maybe she needs an economist to explain the difference - a run-of-the-mill economist, not a clueless nobel prize winner.

Warren Buffett manages to pay less taxes than his secretary because he has no income. He doesn’t pay himself enough to make a dent in tax revenue. He doesn’t sell his assets so doesn’t pay capital gains tax. He keeps assets and uses them to buy his next asset and fund his lifestyle.

There isn’t a billionaire alive who would let the Dems take much of their income and if she starts taking wealth there won’t be many billionaires left in the country for long. And taxing millionaires won’t give her nearly the amount of money she needs. What she really wants (needs) is to tax EVERYONE 60+%.

LOL. The person I really feel bad for is David Hogg, the current Ruler of the Cosmos. I’m sure he was expecting a longer time in the job.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when she has her first meeting with the Democratic establishment up on the hill (Nancy, Alcee Hastings et al...). It will probably go something like this:

Look sweetheart, none of this bull$h%$$ you’re spouting really works. We spout it also, just to get elected. It’s called Santa Clause politics. However, you’re here now so if you’re going to graduate to the grownups table, you can still say all that crap, just remember it’s not true. Just say it to get elected. And never, ever actually debate someone on the other side of the aisle. You’re too stupid to come up with good bull$%#$% responses to them. Just stay on Comedy Central, MSNBC and CNN. They’ll treat you with kid gloves....
