Perhaps the biggest workforce development gains are to be made in the education system, which has not modernized with the economy. Too many young Americans are being pushed into bachelor of arts programs of limited value and excessive costs.
Surprise! I agree -- lib arts are best taught over the online, baby. Around here there's already some high school use of online courses (!) and in-person accelerated college degrees offered as class time during the high school years (a friend's kid graduated that way, and finished college in two years).
Meanwhile, the Labor Department predicts more than 1 million new jobs will be created in the fields of construction, maintenance and installation by 2026. More colleges need to offer and more students need to attend one- or two-year vocational training programs to land these jobs. Shop classes need to return to middle and high schools across the country. The executive order will develop industry-recognized and portable credentials that can run parallel to those offered by vocational schools.

My thoughts exactly. Not only does he have a track record in this area, but he’s intelligent and articulate in making his case for careers of this sort, and he comes across as a truly caring individual. I’d put him in the highest profile position I could - if anybody would appeal to middle class Americans across the board - white, black, Hispanic, whatever - it would be Mike Rowe.
CETA, yeah, I worked with CETA "students" when I was in the local office of the state bureaucracy. It amounted to on-the-job training for jobs that didn't really need much training, and that was a good fit, because most of them couldn't do much more than moving files/mail run kinds of thing. They could read, but couldn't alphabetize, so they couldn't file in the rather huge filing department.
Years, ages around fifteen to eighteen, are wasted that could be spent as interns in a working environment acquiring skills and habits that will make them productive and self-satisfied. While they'll eventually be pulling in $30 an hour in a necessary trade, most of their more "intellectually" inclined peers can go on to the iron rice bowl government and academic sectors. Most of the "blue overall" workers you see in Germany are products of that system.
The teachers, bureaucrats, executives, etc. were identified early on, and the taxi drivers, kebab shop workers, and other low paying menials are from someplace else, like Turkey or Bulgaria and not necessarily products of the German system.
If this is what Trump is driving at, it would be the biggest revolution in American society since maybe the Civil War. If you think Liberal heads are exploding now, just wait till someone is brave enough to tear down the American higher education scam.
The German “sorting hat” is always working and at every level, long before they become teens. The final effect may only be seen the day the university-bound wave good-bye to their vocational-bound peers but everybody has known for some time before that ever happens. The egalitarian streak in most Americans resist hearing that their progeny would be better suited to work with their hands as they don’t understand the amount of head work that goes into most trades these days.
redirect lots of federal monies going to any lefty university and direct it towards Vocational Schools.
We can all agree that the job of colleges is to educate our future workforce.
We can also agree that they have failed miserably to accomplish that with these useless "studies" degrees they conned our young into getting.
And, we can agree that the students bear the blame for taking these classes instead of gaining employable job skills in the first place.
So here's my idea. The colleges train the "studies" experts with employable job skills, as they should have done with the money they were paid. The students, with employable skills, might be able to find work with their new skills, and pay off their college debts. No tax payer funded bailouts, and no forcing the colleges to do anything they hadn't agreed to by accepting the tuition in the first place.
This will be on the condition that the students abandon their degrees in their feel good studies programs. To hold on to them would not only be having their cake and eating it too, but would be an admission that their degrees in <fill in the blank> studies have value, in which case they would be owed nothing.
OK, I've been here long enough to know this will blasted eight ways to Sunday, but we have to start somewhere, so have at it.
When I started in the work world, I had no skills. Lucky for me, companies were so desperate for people, they ran training programs, in my case 6 weeks full time, paid, to get us ready for entry level employment.
Im not a dummy, and over the years went far beyond what my lack of education might normally have meant... but as it happens, in a world where technology is changing faster than schools can keep up, I never encountered a ceiling.
But I have always appreciated that program that got me in the door when no one in his right mind would have hired me. Eventually companies stopped training when they discovered H1B.

This is not the government’s job.
Depends on where you are. My husband lost his job 3 months ago and I am being let go also. We have 2 hospitals combining and the super kmart closed. There are a dozen applicants for jobs, 11 of them below 50.
He thinks its because he is over 50.
We live in a small town, so we just have to move.
I have lived out of my car when i was younger, dreading it, but I can survive.
I don’t think it’s a government program per se - not any more than my old HS shop classes or the Voc-Ed auto/electrical type classes many attended to prepare for decent jobs w/o college. Over the decades they took anything dealing with actual work prep out of public schools - and ironically, some community colleges started similar programs......
