Why on earth would ANYONE keep a security clearance once they leave the government? Does that give them access to anything or what?

Exactly! Every place where I’ve left employment, I turned over my keys and had all access rights revoked. Brennan is an EX-employee. He should have NO access rights to anything whatsoever!

People previously at high levels in government retain some security clearance to deal with their own records. Supposedly for scholarly and historic reasons. All security clearances are restricted by ‘need to know’.

These level people are often left with the clearance so they could be asked to consult on some previous cases.

Notice that clearance is not the same as access. They have no access any more, but if they are asked into a room to consult they can be given classified information.
