The rise and fall of the Art Institute of Charleston took just 11 years, carrying with it the aspirations of hundreds of young artists and leaving some of them struggling beneath a mountain of debt.
The for-profit chain of colleges opened its Market Street location in April 2007 amid fanfare from local political leaders, including then-Mayor Joe Riley, who had invited the school to train workers for the hospitality and restaurant industries.

That's a different institution, not affiliated with the national network of Art Institutes. Their San Francisco branch was called the Art Institute of California or the California Art Institute. The city sued them for shady practices and they had to pay millions to the city. The Art Institute of Chicago is also not affiliated with the Art Institutes.

The only training in the fine arts that you really need is how to schmooze your way into the gallery scene. My young friend, Ricky Paul, hung himself in studio 8a of the SF art Institute in 1988 while taking a class in “extreme performance” called Music and Theater that was not on the official curriculum. Oh yah, it was “taught” by Christopher Coppola, nephew of Francis Ford and brother of Nicholas Cage. After showing initial interest in a wrongful death law suit, Melvin Belli’s office dropped it like a live grenade.

“Higher Education” is probably the biggest scam in this country today - from very overpriced Ivy League universities which dispense leftwing propaganda in place of in-depth knowledge to fly-by-night art and nursing schools providing shoddy training leading to non-jobs - let the buyer beware......
