It’s true that nothing legal will happen to these three or to Cankles or Zero. Or Rice, or Lynch, or any Democrat.
But the Democrat brand is being badly stained by all of this. I think Trump is working on the branding angle rather than the “lock her up” angle. There is a very real risk that locking Democrats up, even if he could, would backfire politically - Trump and the Republicans would wind up being the “meanies” and the jailed Democrats would be martyrs.
We would love to see the Dems locked up, but we should ask ourselves - if a couple years from now it turns out that the Democrats committed political suicide with Spygate, the Mueller witch hunt, and their obsession with bringing down a duly elected POTUS - if it turns out Democrats have let their appeal and can no longer win elections -
Won’t that be a pretty good consolation prize? True they didn’t get locked up, but they will have paid an even higher price for their crimes.
I don’t believe in consolation prizes. I believe in equal justice under the law for everyone. If these miscreants subverted justice and committed criminal acts, then they need to pay the appropriate consequences allowed under the law. No exceptions.
To let the skate is to set up a two tier justice system and allow others to think they will get special treatment down the road.
