First time I have heard that Christians embraced Putin. I have heard it said Christianity is alive and well in Russia, and that Putin regularly attends a Russian Orthodox Church, and that the Russian Orthodox Church is the only church worldwide to supports the beleaguered Christian churches in Syria and other places in the Mideast. But If that is supporting Putin then I guess I’m guilty.
The Russia government supports the Russian Orthodox church and actively suppresses protestants.
They are returning to the time when Russian Orthodox was the state religion.
