Composites don’t do well with impact damage, especially if the fibers crack.

Good point, too. A lot would depend on the toughness or flexibility factor. Kevlar composites are pretty tough and cam be engineered to retain strength with some cracking. At least, these would be easy to repair: just peel off the decking and stick anther girder in.
