The Col was from Corbin, Ky. I protested in support of the Freedom Riders at the Trailways (or was it Greyhound? Do not remember) bus station in Corbin. Several guns were poked in my face and I was asked if I knew why there were no niggers in Corbin. The accused said, because the last one who lived here was hung from a tree by the neck. It was not a nice place to live but it was the Colonel’s home town.
Jesse Jackson later told me that the SCLC was concerned about my protest. “If you had been shot we would have died in Corbin,” he said.
You have certainly lived some interesting life!
You have my utmost respect for risking your life in the name of human and civil rights!
If you’re ever near Cody, Wyoming I have a blackberry pie with your name on it!
