The more Germany and Austria act like this, the more I am inclined to hope Russia annexes them in a brutal way.
When I was assigned to Mannheim in the mid-1980s, during the season of nuclear protests in Germany, I wrote a letter to the editor of the Stars and Stripes, in which I advocated letting the Soviets take Western Europe, particularly Germany. My basic point was that the Europeans are ungovernable and Russia would have spent its treasure and manpower just keeping control of the place. Plus it would have taught the Europeans a lesson by showing them the difference between the "rule" of the Americans in Europe and the "rule" of Russians.
I was surprised that it was printed in the Stars and Stripes and I received responses from the American ambassador to Germany, a couple of German generals, and some back-bencher in the German parliament, all contesting my statements and saying how wonderful the German .. and European .. citizenry was, and how much they "loved" the Americans.
Needless to say, my opinions weren't changed then and have only gotten stronger over the years. Additionally, in the 1980s, I made an exception for Britain. That is no longer true ... let them all go down together.
