Or as my Polish grandma would tell me, “Sometimes we were Polish, and then sometimes we learned we were German, and then we were told we were Russian, and then we were Polish again.”

And both statements were probably true. Germans settled all over Eastern Europe. In fact, there’s an area along the Volga River where ethnic Germans once constituted the majority of the population.
