Closed for Business: Trump Administration Moves to Shrink Grounds for Asylum

...

While migrants fleeing communist governments in Central America during the Cold War were welcomed in the 1980s, those arriving now do not fit into a larger American geopolitical agenda. Their afflictions — gang violence, domestic brutality and poverty — are neither American national security priorities nor anything that was originally intended to be covered under the laws of asylum.

Mr. Trump has taken monumental steps to shrink the asylum system and discourage people from applying based on a belief that the United States is taking in too many foreigners. The moves are part of a larger plan developing in Washington to reshape the reputation of America as a safe haven, one that has inspired generations of people like Francisco and Miguel to journey here.

The most extreme proposal yet would upend the system by eliminating the use of offices along the border, known as “ports of entry,” as asylum processing centers. Introduced this spring by members of the leadership of United States Customs and Border Protection, according to a government official with direct knowledge of the plan, it would allow hopeful refugees to apply for protection only from abroad, stranding them for much longer in the conditions they hope to escape.

On Wednesday, the administration announced new guidance for asylum officers, who are the first to evaluate claims along the border, instructing them to scrutinize asylum applications according to stricter standards, and to weigh the applicants’ claims of fear against whether they have previously entered the United States illegally.

“Asylum was never meant to alleviate all problems — even all serious problems — that people face every day all over the world,” Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, said last month in announcing a landmark decision to eliminate domestic and gang violence as grounds for asylum.

Although I sympathize with people who want to come to America for a better life, there are more than 7 billion people in the world, and billions of them would rather live in the U.S. or Europe rather than their own countries. Immigration policies need to be in the national interest.

Maybe you could leave and free up room for a potential patriot?

Keep doing that, DJT, and you get reelected in spite of your quirks.

Those aren’t quirks. They’re features.

Well said, reaganaut1.

Immigration policies need to be in our national interest, not what makes the Left feel like “good”, “generous” or “virtuous” people.

If we need to shut down immigration for any reason, we should be able to do so.

If we want to change polices in any way, we should be able to do so if it is in the best interests of our country.

People outside this country, or people trying to get in should have zero say in those policies.

One of the unbreakable rules for granting any asylum should be that, if you are admitted to the US for asylum, you will not be permitted to return to the country you are seeking asylum from, or any neighboring country, for any reason, unless it's to return there to live on a permanent basis.

Too many of these "asylum" seekers routinely return to the countries that they are "fleeing" from to visit relatives, take care of business, etc. If it is too dangerous for them to live there, it's too dangerous for you to return for visits. If you are going to return there for a visit, then you waive your asylum in the US and will have to reapply should you try to reenter the US.

Unfortunately, the USA serves to often as a pressure relief valve for those $hithole countries. By taking in too many asylum seekers the pressure within those countries to change is reduced and the situations do not improve.

It’s a win-win for the despots running s**thole countries. They get rid of their poor and their criminals, and when the “refugees” get jobs in the USA, they send dollars to their home countries, helping to keep those governments afloat.

Uncle Sap rips off the US Middle Class in this process. The US taxpayers have to pay the “refugee’s” bills for “free” food and rent and pay more taxes for county hospitals and over-crowded schools for children who are illiterate in two languages.

As if we don’t have some of that in our own country.

“Stop ALL immigration for 25 years.”

From the article:

“those arriving now do not fit into a larger American geopolitical agenda”

And we are ruined if we are flooded by any other culture.

Looking for a job or trying to escape a bad neighborhood are not reasons for asylum. That covers 95% of current asylum seekers. We don’t need even one more immigrant in this country.

Let those from Central America wait and apply for asylum status at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, if it is necessary for an individual to first escape conditions in El Salvador, Hondurus or Guatemala.
