Baltimore police have 'stopped noticing crime' after Freddie Gray riots
American Thinker ^ | 07/14/2018 | Rick Moran

A remarkable article in USA Today confirms what common sense and intelligent observation have told us for years.  Immediately following the Baltimore race riots that ensued after Freddie Gray was found dead in the back of a police van, Baltimore cops began to "stop noticing crime."  They still responded swiftly to calls for help.  But the police force turned a blind eye to crimes being committed right in front of them.

The analysis by USA Today examined millions of Baltimore police records and determined that shocking rise in crime occurred that was directly related to a fall in "on view" reports of crime by police.

"Immediately upon the riot, policing changed in Baltimore, and it changed very dramatically," says Donald Norris, an emeritus professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, who reviewed USA TODAY's analysis.  "The outcome of that change in policing has been a lot more crime in Baltimore, especially murders, and people are getting away with those murders."

Police officials acknowledge the change.  "In all candor, officers are not as aggressive as they once were, pre-2015.  It's just that fact," says acting Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle, who took command of Baltimore's police force in May.

Tuggle blames a shortage of patrol officers and the fallout from a blistering 2016 Justice Department investigation that found the city's police regularly violated residents' constitutional rights and prompted new limits on how officers there carry out what had once been routine parts of their job.  At the same time, he says, police have focused more of their energy on gun crime and less on smaller infractions.

"We don't want officers going out, grabbing people out of corners, beating them up and putting them in jail," Tuggle says.  "We want officers engaging folks at every level.  And if somebody needs to be arrested, arrest them [sic]

“What else did you expect.....? On the other hand police should not have free reign either as they have their fair share of bad apples. I realize that it is a fine line not always easy to follow and make the right judgement in a split second.”

All you say is true! But I know from friends who are retired LEOs that the level of inhumanity and $hit cops have to deal with on a daily basis, coupled with their need for self-preservation, and the end result is some lawlessness in the ranks and a twisted sense of what reality is.

Milwaukee is real close to Chicago but they’re drawing well with Brewers. Angelos need to die and then the management of Orioles will improve and fans will turn out to attend the games once again.

Hey, let's not lose sight of the big picture.

Complaints of racism and brutality against police are way down.

And that's what's important, right?

I live northeast of Baltimore. You’re absolutely correct.

Very red and normal around here. Insanely blue Baltimore south to DC.

I hate it when I have to go there for family. Not the family the state. Very stupid anti 2A laws. Like so many states, remove Montgomery county (DC) and Baltimore and it would be red.

I've got a Michigan CPL.

We were coming back from the Outer Banks, NC and purposely planned veering around Maryland on the way home, secondary to them not honoring Michigan CPLs. I was surpised when we had to go through it for about 5 minutes. When I saw & passed that Pennsylvania sign, the sense of relief was awesome.

I did not want to get pulled over in some communist craphole and made an example of.

I wonder why...

It used to be you had to be a bit of a sadist to want to be a cop. Today you have to be a masochist.

Hard to believe that nobody mentioned the fact that Obama and Holder took over Police operations.

Was watching Netflix “Dope” about Baltimore heroin dealers. The FIRST thing the dealer talks about is how great it is now with the police backed off, and NO PLAINCLOTHES COPS in Maryland anymore.

We have been so gentlemanly and non chauvinist and so even- handed that it’s starting to make me want to puke.

No one pats us on the back for being good little boys and playing well with others.

No Go Zones in our country! They’re coming.
Have to go to Harlem or Detroit to feel safe from them.

the average Baltimore LEO didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that they get paid the same amount of money whether they stop crime or not ...

Your comment is not helpful, and not applicable to today's police force, which in the city of Baltimore is made up mostly of minority individuals.

What this article fails to mention is that six police officers were raked over the coals and subjected to prosecution for the Freddie Gray thing, but were found not guilty in several trials by juries that also contained black citizens. It was a railroading and a horrible harassment of working class family men that most families would suffer terribly under financially. Baltimore also had an officer shot recently while sitting in his patrol car not bothering anyone.

It's no wonder they are wary of doing the job. Even when they're right, they're wrong in the eyes of the Democrat city officials and race-hustler leaders.
