WASHINGTON -- Austin, Texas, will be the location for the headquarters of the new U.S. Army Futures Command, Army Secretary Mark T. Esper announced today at a Pentagon news conference.
Army Undersecretary Ryan D. McCarthy then explained the details. He said the process started with 150 metropolitan areas, narrowed down to five. Besides Austin, officials considered Boston; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Philadelphia

At least all the employees can hire cheap labor to do their lawns and clean their houses.
They must not be doing anything very secret at this new command. Austin is a sieve.
Agree; just can’t understand “Austin”. Horrible place for military families to live.
“Austin has been home to the Camp Mabry Joint Force Headquarters since 1892.”
Camp Maybry is in a neighborhood surrounded by houses that are all over a million dollars, and there are no problems at all.
The Army is trying to be fiscally responsible by growing the Army. Putting the completely unnecessary command in Austin, Texas of all places is just so typical. This is almost Onion material. Where is congressional over site? The Army has been bludgeoned with base closures, manpower shortage and budget constraints after continuous war since 9/11. Let’s slash the officer ranks across the board and cut the fat from the Pentagon and other worthless Army commands.
Only 100 Army personnel. The other 400 will be civilian.
This is Obama era initiated garbage.
CENTCOM is located in am urban area.
The regents wouldn’t have to provide squat. Fort Hood has space and as a bonus, it isn’t overrun with America hating freaks like Austin is.
And it’s a bad Idea.
Yuma was for decades host to a massive Air Force Ammunition facility. That was an egregious example of stupid.
I don’t understand the purpose of your non sequitur post.
I never said it hadnt come about before.
I pointed out that locating legitimate military targets near population centers is stupid and irresponsible.
so much liberalism, I guess they like protests in the cities they had to choose from.
who made that list?
“Besides Austin, officials considered Boston; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Philadelphia.”
I don’t think Ft. Hood was under consideration for the Futures Command Headquarters.
Hope this effort has a better outcome than the last time with the Future Combat System (FCS). Spent a lot of money with little return.
“who made that list?”
I think it was the Department of Defense.
I’d bet the people who are going to staff the place would rather live in Austin, where there is stuff to do outside of work, rather than in rural, boring Killeen.
The same sort of brain that said it would be a bigger tragedy than the massacre of men women and children at Ft. Hood if somehow our military was to become less diverse than it was while tolerating a known wolf islamonazi who was known to be communicating with Al Qaeda?
put it in Brooklyn then. hipsters like Brooklyn.
Judging by the list, it looks like like they were going for overrun by America hating freaks locations. I am guessing the officials mentioned were Obama promoted officials.
For sure. The main consideration of any military organization should always be how much fun you can have when you aren’t working. /s
Huh? Why does the military want to invest in soybeans and pork bellies?
Perhaps they dont understand what futures means. Or I dont.
Read the following article for what the purpose of this endeavor is attempting
to accomplish. It by far isn’t a military base type operation but rather an attempt
at providing future needs for the military. jmo.

Army: Quality of life, tech culture helped Austin land Futures Command
Doubtful...today's military is more liberal than we care to admit, a somewhat socialist meritocracy, and it helps to attach yourself to the right people.
It's always been that way, though I'm glad I never served in a unit larger than battalion size. I liked the idea of being a bigger fish in a smaller pond, where I had to wear multiple hats.
