Actually, they haven’t always been bad. Political massacres are just part of the political landscape in Latin America. Whereas drug cartel-perpetrated massacres only began a decade ago. People used to cross the border to buy cheap prescription drugs, get cheap dental work done and take in the Mexican experience, by venturing further in. These days, many don’t even cross the border any more, and those who do, don’t stray from the main drag.

McAllen, whose population, at 86% Hispanic, resembles its counterpart across the border, has an extremely low murder rate, about 3 per 100K population. Reynosa, right across the border, has a murder rate exceeding 30 per 100K population. That’s roughly the same as Newark’s, which is not a good place to be. The real danger for gringos crossing the border isn’t so much murder, but kidnapping.

Just a detail but 36 yo grandmother is not so "19th century." Being married right out of high school at 18 was very common through the 1950's - 60's where I came from (blue collar Pennsylvania.)

This case,though deals with a 13-yo granddaughter, not a newborn. That means the childbearing for mama and grandmama was probably around 12 years old for both. :o/

Pretty awful, isn’t it. Though 150 years ago, girls not much older than that, here, were married to men 20-25 years their senior, and thought it was a good match. In much of the rest of the world, marrying an older man is the norm, though “civilized” countries don’t usually allow young teenaged girls to marry older men. Older men are considered more prosperous and serious, I guess is the idea, instead of we, here, who think of it as lecherous.
