THE MAYOR OF THE California town of Lancaster wants to forbid all city employers from requiring workers to wear neckties on the job.
Mayor R. Rex Parris asked the city attorney at a council meeting this week, according to The Los Angeles Times, if enacting a policy restricting employers from enforcing a tie-wearing dress code was possible.
Actually there is a valid reason for his request. Like most bureaucrats he lives in constant fear that one of the unwashed masses will grab a hold of his tie and strangle him to death and get off by a jury of his peers (fellow unwashed).
I’m female, you remind me of something I would have been fired for, years ago, on my first job at a bank - bare legs. Everyone wore stockings or pantyhose in those days, it was thought tacky not to. And everyone wore dresses. In fact, pantyhose were invented because of mini-skirts, which were so short it was hard to wear garters without them showing. After some social changes, someone told me, “Stop wearing hosiery, you look too much like a WASP.”
I’ve always noticed them in the California League baseball standings.
“most clothes are designed for skinny gay boys”
No kidding. I used to shop at Nordstrom’s, but the clothing there turned skinny AIDS victim homosexual about 10 years ago so I stopped going there.
California. One more notch in the
total disrespect pole. Now people
will be showing up for job interviews
wearing tie-dyed t-shirts, cut-offs,
and flip flops.
I think the idea of being dressed better than most others translates to being in charge.
In my line of work most people wear a tee shirt, and anyone wearing a collared shirt is seen as being a step up, some wearing a tie would be seen as defantly not being a worker, but a supervisor or other important individual.
If I’m standing around in a group of my peers and someone walks up wanting to ask a question, invariably they direct their question to whomever is best dressed.
That’s why I haven’t worn a tee shirt in decades. Even if I was doing yard work I will not be mistaken for the hired help. I have had equantences connect several times that no matter the setting the have never seen my in anything less than a collared shirt.
I hate ties as much, if not more than your average Joe, but this is nuts. It is none of the city’s business what attire a company requires of its workers as long as it is not obscene.
I remember some time ago when a union at a Chrysler plant in Detroit forced management to stop wearing ties, saying it demonstrated a culture of classes.
I had a co-worker who always wore a tie, though not required to. It made him look like he valued himself and his job (which he did), and it gave a good impression to people. What you wear says something about you.
Remember the college student who presented her thesis in her underwear.
“California mayor wants all deck chairs to aim east”.
