Caroline Glick: NATO Is the Author of Its Own Demise
Breitbart ^ | Caroline Glick

Posted on 07/11/2018 3:13:57 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

One of the interesting aspects of the hysteria is that NATO’s supporters never seem to think it is necessary to explain why it would be a bad idea to end the alliance.

*snip

NATO’s ineffectiveness ought to be the key issue of discussion when considering its future. But to date, that weakness has been largely overlooked in the rush to blame Trump for allegedly destroying America’s alliances.

*snip*

In an interview with Bloomberg last week, German Defense Minister Ursula Von Der Leyen insisted that the most important goal of Thursday’s summit would be “unity.”

*snip*

Notably, Von Der Leyen failed to mention who NATO’s opponents are. That was no fluke. The one thing that has been lacking in all of NATO’s post-Cold War interventions has been a common sense of strategic purpose.

*snip*

As for radical Islam, due to Turkish membership in NATO, and due to European refusal to take any significant steps to rein in radical Islamic forces in Europe or anywhere else, it is abundantly clear that NATO is not the proper vehicle for U.S.-led collective defense against Iran or other jihadist powers.

*snip*

As for President Trump, despite the bloviations of his critics, he bears no responsibility for NATO’s irrelevance. Trump did not cause NATO to have little role to play in fighting the key threats to American and global security. NATO has had nearly three decades to figure out how to do that. But it failed.

All that Trump has done is point out the reality of NATO’s decline — which his four predecessors refused to acknowledge.

Everything Trump is saying now I’ve been saying for DECADES. Just look at those comments on Yahoo which has a Leftward bias. There is near universal agreement in America that the Yurps have been freeloading and continuing to pay for their defense is neither fair, nor in America’s interest.

Give them one last chance to pay up and carry at least a significant part of their own Defense burden. When they blow that chance - which we all know they will - pull out of NATO and bring the boys home.

Trump is correct. I would move EUCOM HQ’s out of Germany, and into Poland.

So you would downsize the US presence but put us on the doorstep of Mother Russia?

Doubt Russia would like that, plus any forces there would essentially be a "tripwire" for more forces later.

Hate to be the troopers who get the honor of being "T-72 fodder"

And if Europe is not interested in avoiding a Muslim takeover then what can we do to prevent it?

If there is a muslim takeover of Europe, there will be a Christian and Jewish holocaust.

Do you not think that is worth preventing.

Now as to your question--a good question--that (I paraphrase) "if Europe doesn't care enough to defend itself what can we do to prevent it?"...let me say that I have spent much time thinking about this and simply am not sure what the answer is.

Surely we have to conduct a blunt and direct foreign policy with Europe as I believe Trump is now trying to do.

One in which the U.S. will not be enabling Europe by paying to support a feckless NATO unless NATO changes to actually identify and build an force to fight Islam.

That's a start.

But yes, there has to be a sea change in both NATO and European members (Turkey should be kicked out immediately as part of the change of NATO).

Really? When I looked at the comments earlier today they were ALL in support of Trump.

Yes. That was my point. There is widespread agreement among Americans about this even as we disagree with each other about a lot of other things.

It’s a shame we don’t get more truth in articles like this one. She’s a great writer and well worth the time to read...

Not a Trump fan,

If you are not a Trump fan, what are you?

Why are you here?

Who, at this point in the political process, would you like to replace Trump??

Are you one of those never-Trump maggots who voted for Hillary or went third-party or stayed home?

Apologies for #48.

Having reviewed your posting history, you look OK.

It's just that, when it comes to the "business man from New York", as John Batchelor referred to him during the primaries, we must all stick together and defeat the Left!
