Amy Air Forces Staff Sgt. John H. Canty was laid to rest under blue skies at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, [July 10, 2018] more than seven decades after his plane was shot down over occupied France.
More than two dozen family and friends from his native Winsted, Conn., Georgia, Illinois and Nebraska gathered at the chapel for a private service, then Cantys flag-draped casket was placed on a caisson for the procession to the gravesite for burial with full military honors.
A lone drummer kept cadence as an honor guard escorted the horse-drawn caisson down a quiet tree-lined road. Some family members walked, others rode in cars behind the procession until they reached the graveside near a large river birch.
Canty was a member of the 555th Bombardment Squadron, 386th Bombardment Group, IX Bomber Command, aboard a B-26 Maurader on a nighttime bombing mission when his B-26 was shot down on June 22, 1944 between the villages of Baron-sur-Odon and Gavrus, France. All eight crewmembers were killed. Because the location of the crash was in German-held territory, U.S. forces were unable to make a thorough search for the crew.
Cantys remains were recovered from a crash site in the French village of Gavrus, southwest of Caen, and identified in December through DNA testing. Remains of two other crewmembers Staff Sgt. Tom McCaslin and Technical Sgt. Robert E. Perkins have not yet been found.
