It’s a definite sh##hole, it has taken a herculean effort to get maybe a couple of nice hotels there, of course barricaded from the masses.
And the most hypocritical of all, the luxurious cruise port for people to dock at and claim they’ve been to Haiti. It’s laughable, like having a walled-off Disneyland for tourists.

Was down there in '52, courtesy of the USN. I had mess cook duty and part of my job was to lower the "clean" garbage (supper leftovers) down to the bumboats alongside.

I had just retrieved a cannister when one of the guys alongside of me says "Geez, willya look at that." One guy in the skiff was chowing down on leftover chicken bones (fried chicken that night) and the other was licking the wrappers that the ice cream bars came in. I was 18 then and thought I had seen poor people in NYC but this was one Helluva education.

Things have gone downhill from then. /s
