Senior National Security Official Who Supported Refugees Forced Out Of White House Role
On Jul 15, 2018
A top national security council official who clashed with members of the Trump administration over immigration policy is no longer working at the White House, according to reports.
Jennifer Arangio, the former NSC senior director for international organisations and alliances, left her position this week, administration officials told multiple outlets. It was unclear whether she resigned or was forced out, though the departure reportedly came after months of tensions with immigration hard-liners in the White House.
A spokesperson for the NSC told The Independent that the council did not comment on personnel matters. Ms Arangio did not respond to a request for comment.
Ms Arangio, a former lawyer, was charged with overseeing the NSCs engagement with multilateral organisations and advised on US global humanitarian assistance.
In this role, she repeatedly tried to correct misinformation about refugees and migrants provided to the president by White House adviser Stephen Miller and other members of the Domestic Policy Council, a former White House official told Politico.
Mr Miller is known for his hard-line stance on immigration, including his support for the presidents zero tolerance border patrol policy, which resulted in the separation of more than 2,000 migrant children from their families in recent months. Donald Trump himself has drastically cut the number of refugees allowed into the country to 45,000 per year the lowest in decades.
Still, the former White House adviser described Ms Arangio as fiercely loyal to the president. She worked for months as the national director for womens engagement on Mr Trumps campaign, according to her LinkedIn page, and joined the NSC in January of 2017. She previously served as senior counsel to the House Committee on Homeland Security for eight years.
Ms Arangios departure comes amid a wave of shakeups on the NSC, following foreign policy hawk John Boltons appointment as national security adviser in early April.
Former homeland security adviser Tom Bossert resigned his role just days after Mr Bolton took control of the council, followed by NSC spokesman Michael Anton, deputy national security adviser for strategy Nadia Schadlow, and the councils chief of staff and executive secretary, Keith Kellogg.
Two senior officials left the NSCs Middle East section just this week, according to Politico. Adviser Joel Rayburn was expected to join the State Department, where he would continue working on Middle East issues, the outlet reported. It was unclear what would happen to the other official, Michael Bell.
Mr Bolton took over as national security adviser from Lieutenant General HR McMaster, who was appointed to replace former national security adviser Michael Flynn in the early months of the Trump administration.

*Subject:* *Travel #1a: Paraglider status and Turnberry color while we wait*
Turnberry
Update on one of the many spectacles reported in Scotland this weekend: Several Scottish police officers assembled here told your pooler that the protester who flew a paragliding contraption yards away from POTUS after his arrival here on Friday has been captured and will have his day in court tomorrow.
Some color from an event space in Turnberry, which is detached from the main hotel building, where your pool was being swept around 2:30 pm. A trio of cheery Turnberry employees dressed in grey and blue kilts greeted your pool as we were brought inside.
The space is filled with gold-colored plastic chairs with ivory cushions.
Your pooler photographed a menu on the way in, apologies to an official who told her not to as she did so. Afternoon tea is 30 GBP per person and served from 12 to 4. For an extra 10 GBP, guests may have their tea accompanied with Trump Ros or sparkling wine. Other options include prawn salad with mango (16 GBP) and gluten free chocolate avocado cake (6.5 GBP). No sign of POTUS favorites like steak.
You can smell the sea salt and algae in the air here, as we are a few hundred yards away from shore. It appears that POTUS missed the rain that began falling around 2 pm when he golfed this morning. The sea and the sky are two different shades of grey: dove and slate.
Tara McKelvey of the BBC sends along this color too:The bar has bottles of Bacardi and Tanqueray, and there are silver buckets lined up on a wall nearby. Men are walking with their golf clubs near the sea - with gulls flying near them.
An officer in a light green jacket is walking through a field of tall dried grass.
No sounds or sights of any sort of protests from where we are.
As your pool was being ushered out of the building, the POTUS account began retweeting a flurry of MS-13-related content shared by the WH social media director.
Still holding as we wait to roll w/ POTUS/FLOTUS.
That one always cracks me up!!
