A youth group from Bradenton, Florida, that was scheduled to return from a missionary trip in Haiti is stranded until at least Monday, Executive Pastor Dewayne McFarlin said.
The group from Bradenton's Woodland Community Church left Neply, Haiti, early Saturday for a 3 p.m. flight from Port-au-Prince International Airport, McFarlin said. Only a few miles into the approximately 30-mile journey, the group, which includes middle school- and high school-age children, encountered armed individuals demanding payment for access to the roadway, according to McFarlin.
They talked their way past the roadblock, but elected to turn around when they came to second group of armed individuals who had erected a blockade of burning tires on the road, McFarlin says.
A local colleague of McFarlin's was riding on a motorcycle a few miles ahead of the missionary group's bus. The friend called him to say that the road ahead was filled with similar impromptu "checkpoints," McFarlin said.
"They weren't government or police," McFarlin says. "Just people taking advantage of the situation."
The group returned to Neply but McFarlin said he thinks they won't get out until Monday at the earliest.

This is going to sound harsh but if you let your minor child go to Haiti you are an idiot.
Indeed, any adult would be crazy to go there.
Not sure about this one. Perhaps they mean police roadblocks. If somehow you are driving around (not a good idea) and you run into a mob of people you need to get through them any way you can and not stop.
I thought the Clinton Foundation had fixed Haiti.

I agree. Most of the time, the people are great but Haiti is essentially another failing African nation and things can go sideways REALLY fast.
Haiti is a lost cause. Let it go! Those people are incapable of governance of any kind, and while the human suffering is awful, there simply isn’t any way that the civilized world can help. If anything, we should protect the Dominican Republic from any incursions.

My daughter’s group went with a chaperone. A naval reserve SEAL. He came back saying it was no more dangerous than your local urban center. As long as you are not in the city, it’s fine. Poor as hell, but fine.
In the areas where the missionaries are, they know that the missions bring schools and medicines. They are not going to risk that.
I did not even know this was going on and I usually pay attention to things like this.
