I wonder how long the can survive without a regime change if their export market dried up, even temporarily? We can find alternatives quicker than they can find new money-rich markets. A billion and a half unemployed Chinese will be hard to contain or support.

“There will be pain. But the pain here will be less than EVERYWHERE ELSE. In the long, even medium term (1-2 years) things will be much, much better in the US than any time in the last 30 years.”

Agreed. It may not be pleasant while it lasts but this is the only way to stop Chiner from gutting us. The usual Repuke establishment squish (assuming he had the backbone to even start this process) would have already buckled. It will take a willingness to see this through to make it successful. I think Trump will see it through to a successful endpoint.

“The war has been going on for decades. We just never fought back.”

True.

“No crisis, no catastrophe”

Unless you’re a farmer with contracts in China.

While China may shift to buying soybeans from Argentina and wheat from Canada, the agricultural commodities demand will remain constant. It’s just like oil.

It IS a constant.

But contracts take a while to unwind.

I note that Dalio didn't use the words "trade war" but simply "war." I believe he means it in the traditional sense. And I think it's timely.

In the words of the great Satchel Paige, "When you're runnin' don't look behind you -- somethin' may be gainin' on you." And while we've been looking blissfully ahead under several status quo Administrations, China has been definitely been gaining on us. It's time to take firm action now rather than wait until it catches us and attempts to destroy us.

"and franciscan dinnerware..."

Do keep in mind; that salad bowel was not intended to be a dog food dish.

This is such a load of crap. China has been nuking us for decades. Between currency manipulation and actual 500% tariffs on US and US branded goods (go most places in China and look at the price of US goods) - they have no ammo left. There is little they can do that they are not already doing. They have everything to lose and little to gain.

And the moronic, pathetic, ignorant, neocons shiver, shake and piss themselves every chance they get on national television.

All of our trading ‘partners’ know exactly what they have been doing to us (can you spell r a p e) and the only long term effect of Trump’s trade ‘war’ will be vastly increased US exports.

The first day of the war was decades ago, when China manipulated it’s currency so our goods cost 40% more than they should have entering China’s markets.

Another writer that needs a day job.

Keep in mind that James Comey was a Bridgewater exec.

Trump campaigned against the abuses of hedge funds. No surprise they’re bitching...

" ‘first day of the war’ with China has begun"

Why wait? We gave them time to spend up on defense, and gave them signal time to control their masses.

So if their GDP drops below whatever truly is the Chinese civil war number - it was supposedly 7%, but obviously they've settled for less now - that's on them.

Popcorn, please.

"Unless one is just starting out, what do you really need? I’m using my Dad’s hand and power tools, still using the Pyrex and franciscan dinnerware my parents got as wedding presents in 1957."

You, fine sir, have not met the Women of Wal-mart, have you?

Seriously, there are a lot of women whom the boobtube & Conde Nast-y has trained to be idiot-stick raging consumers.

Which raises a good point, in the 'what do you really need?' department - if you know where to find these idiot-stick raging consumers, often you can get brand items in the shrinkwrap for up to 90% off in yard sales, divorce sales, estate sales.

Better sooner than later.

And the economics of new technology plus concerns for environmental pollution increasingly pull toward localized production. Which of course is safer from a national security standpoint as well.

I wish our team would make the case more clearly.
