Ocasio-Cortez responds to Dem senator who said policies 'too far to the left' don't win in Midwest

New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) responded to Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s (D-Ill.) claim that policies "too far to the left" can’t win in Midwestern states.

“With respect to the Senator, strong, clear advocacy for working class Americans isn’t just for the Bronx,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweet on Sunday.

Ocasio-Cortez, a democratic socialist and former organizer for Sen. Bernie Sander’s (I-Vt.) 2016 presidential campaign, pointed out that policies to the left of Hillary Clinton won in several Midwestern states.

Sanders won the Democratic primary in Michigan, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Indiana in 2016.

“We then lost several of those states in the general,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “What’s the plan to prevent a repeat?”

Ocasio-Cortez was responding to an interview Duckworth gave to CNN's Jake Tapper in which she a political platform that's “too far to the left” could ostracize voters in the Midwest.

The Hill has reached out to Duckworth’s office for comment.

Duckworth appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday to discuss Ocasio-Cortez’s stunning victory over incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D) in the primary for New York’s 14th congressional district.

Tapper asked Duckworth if the young candidate represents the future of the Democratic Party.

"I think it's the future of the party in the Bronx, where she is,” Duckworth said.

“I think that you can’t win the White House without the Midwest and I don’t think you can go too far to the left and still win the Midwest,” Duckworth said during the interview.

Yep. She won with only 13% or so of the democrat voters in her district turning out. I think she would probably would have lost if it were a high turnout election even in the Bronx.

Political realignment may well be underway. Stay tuned.

White working class voters have been leaving the Democrats. There is also a movement away from Democrats, among those who are liberal leaning on some issues, but not full force radical or openly socialist.

It would be nice to see the Democrats split, with the more radical socialist types forming their own party, with the remnants of the old Democrat party left behind. This could only help the Republicans down the road.

The radical types in the liberal/Democrat side of our politics, are getting restless. The Democratic party isn’t liberal or socialist enough for them, and they want to take over. But if that happens, we could see 2020 be a repeat of 1972. Remember in 1972, the radical types of that era got McGovern the presidential nomination, and he lost a major landslide to Nixon. History could repeat itself. All this could pave the way for a comfortable Trump re-election in 2020.

She’s more Bronx than Clinton could earlier claim being a New Yorker. Besides, she was born there, lived there until five, and apparently made it her home after college. A reasonable claim to me.

It's worth noting that for her first five years, she lived in a middle class Coop in Parkchester, the Bronx. That's not part of the So. Bronx ghetto.

Will Crowley’s name still be on the ballot (Women’s Equality Party)? It appears so.

Are Dillon (Reform) or Perri (Conservative) able to accept donations?

The entire Democrat leadership should resign and let the new Conquistador set the agenda: National Democratic Socialist Workers Party. And keep her talking. Republicans will end up with 75% of house seats and 70 in the senate.

The key word in that phrase is “Americans” ... as in “citizens”, not just residents, legal or otherwise.

Ah, but to the Spanish-speaking set, everyone who lives in North or South America is ‘American’. That’s why our border shouldn’t count.

“Ah, but to the Spanish-speaking set, everyone who lives in North or South America is ‘American’. That’s why our border shouldn’t count.”

......................

True, but to them I’d say any or all or the following:

Show me one person who answers “Where are you from” with “South America”.

Sing me the South American national anthem.

Introduce me to a soldier in the South American army.

Oh, and if borders within those “American” continents don’t count, then the US government’s power to seize property via eminent domain does not stop at the border of any North or South “American” country. OK, thanks for the reminder, so now we’ll seize your lands, enforce our laws, tax you and your neighbors ... oh, and congratulations, since then you are indeed an “American”.
