General Motors on Friday warned that expansive U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles being considered by the Trump administration could lead to a "a smaller GM" and risks isolating U.S. businesses from the global market.

The Trump administration in May launched an investigation into whether imported vehicles posed a national security threat, and U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to quickly impose a 20 percent import tariff on vehicles.
The largest U.S. automaker said in comments filed on Friday with the U.S. Commerce Department that overly broad tariffs could "lead to a smaller GM, a reduced presence at home and abroad for this iconic American company, and risk less not more U.S. jobs."
GM said the tariffs could hike vehicle prices and reduce sales. Even if automakers opted not to pass on higher costs "this could still lead to less investment, fewer jobs, and lower wages for our employees. The carry-on effect of less investment and a smaller workforce could delay breakthrough technologies."

Good. A smaller GM means that it wont cost the taxpayers as much the next time we have to bail those f*ckers out.
LOL. Very true. Good response.
then start the shriveling and quit b!tching!
Don’t give a crap. WILL NEVER buy a GM product since they got a taxpayer bailout for the union thugs.....courtesy of Obama.
I started boycotting GM in the corrupt bailout, and that will continue until the company dies or I do. I do not do business with criminals. Note: I won’t even rent a GM vehicle.
Smaller government is always good.
When it comes to espousing opinions about subjects such as tariff, one has to know the total background of the situations.
Most of us, in the hinterlands, don't. Trump does. That is his job, and he is doing it bigly.
Then I’ll buy a damn Ford. NO MORE GM GOVERNMENT BAILOUTS. My bet is Obama is behind this crap.
I own a 2017 Corvette Z06, but I don’t give a damn about GM and I’d be fine if they went broke.....and stayed broke.
Smaller GM => fewer crappy cars on the road.
That said, since GM is essentially a branch of the government now, does that mean the recent SC ruling applies vis-a-vis union agency fees?
Geee, cry me a river...GM is not making any domestic cars/trucks for the longest time, china, mexico and the canucks are.
Yes, it's as though GM is saying ...
...Stay away Trump supporters, we do not want your business!
Um, okay then.
Okay. Bye, GM.
The point behind the tariff wars
is to bring manufacturing jobs
back to the USA, and the might,
and talent that has been lost
to foreign entities. I’ve worked
in the automotive industry for
many years. Seeing one plant after
another suffer due to corporate greed.
Competition is the driving force, and
whomever could build their vehicles at
the lowest capital expenditures wins the
game of greed. Why, with today’s technology, does a vehicle cost much
more to build?
Tooling for body panels, engineering
to meet current emission standards, drive train power plants, are expeditiously
redesigned.
The answer to higher profit centers on markets that have not been realized.
Hence, GM’s China ambitions.
A communist country. Huge market.
The US market is saturated.
With Ford, Dodge, GM, Toyota, Hyundai,
Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Volvo,
Mitsubishi, etc, all trying to sell
you a vehicle, and there’s nowhere to
sell them.
I bought a brand new Ford F-150 last year. I will never even consider GM vehicles again until they pay back $15 billion they owe taxpayers PLUS interest from 2008.
What Free Traitors want you to believe is that the supply function is static and no new domestic suppliers will EVER come on line. Despite their best efforts brand new factories are still being built in the USA all the time. Not as many as are closed mind you, but the situation is dynamic and not static. With more domestic supply will mean pressure to reduce prices.
Why does the rest of the world almost universally practice protectionism? And name a country with lower average tariff rates than the USA. Answer these questions or shut up you all of you globalist hacks.
Oh poo then. Shut up and let patriots fix this trade mess. Quit spreading free Traitor lies and propaganda you globalist hack.
All U.S. tariffs do is tax the America consumer with forced higher prices for the tariffed products. That’s called shooting yourself in the foot. If other countries are stupid enough to do that, why should we?
Protective tariffs are a palliative, not a curative, measure. It fools a lot of people and makes them feel good. But actually protective tariffs fail to attack the REAL reasons for our economic and competitive malaise. They penalize the American consumer, lower our standard of living, and increase government interference in our economy (the core reason for our problems in the fist place). Protective tariffs do more harm than good making matters worse as the GM issue point out here.
