On a recent cruise my wife and I were seated next to a Hawaiian judge for meals. I've never met anyone more arrogant and conceited. He clearly considered us haoles -- not a complimentary term. If we didn't need Pearl Harbor for our Pacific Fleet -- which might be negotiable -- I'd strongly support legislation repealing Hawaiian statehood. It's true we'd lose a big export market for Spam but they might lose many more tourist dollars spent by the mainland haoles they disrespect so much.
’ ha-ole’ when understood and most locals do not , is not a particularly bad term .
It refers to the first moments of contact between Hawaiian Polynesians and white Europeans ( the Cook expedition ) They had never before seen such pale complexioned people in their entire existence ! The only humans that they had seen if that pale a complexion were their own deceased corpses . ‘ Those without breathe ‘ and so the term/description/perception stuck . We haoles were the original ‘walking dead’ .
Hawaiian locals are as varied as any other folks . Some great and wonderful ! Some , stupid racist knuckledraggers . Some super intelligent , some not so much . Don;t judge an entire race of folks on the bad impression left by one arrogant SOB , whom I am sure is/was exactly as you describe . Did you get a name ? Was it Derrick Watson ? Mr. Coconut himself?
Having been to hawaii numerous times in the past and can state that no where is racial discrimination against whites more noticeable than that state. Between the native islanders and their japanese inbred cousins they are a racist, discriminatory and, as you state, arrogant lot.
Not too surprising that the Racist in Chief obama claims hawaii among his numerous homelands.
