Folks do stuff like this to ingratiate themselves with the 'in crowd' or 'the group think' or, sometimes, they feel as though they are being overlooked for 'the big enchilada' position and they strike out for leadership.

She was a big fish in a small pond, no doubt wanting more. When her peers started chanting 'the group think' of confrontation, she seized the moment, as it were, and had a few hours of fame. Now Ole Scratch has come to collect her fetid soul.
