“Cotton-picking” is something I have always considered to be a replacement oath that doesn’t refer to any class of people.
Trump should use it in one of his speeches. THEN watch the floodgates open as political correctness gets CORRECTED.
this was my understanding as well. The first syllable sounds enough like “God” that you could start to say God-damn, but then shift mid phrase to Cot-ton Picking. In the same way that Gee Whiz! is a substitute for Je-sus. There are others of course.
Still, it;s the kind of thing that perhaps you just don’t use on television generally anyway. Especially to an African American guest. Seems like an appropriate time to call it a microaggression.
Perhaps he should have said,” you’re out of your fu**ing mind”
If he had said that guarantee no suspension at all after he apologized.
“Cotton-picking is something I have always considered to be a replacement oath that doesnt refer to any class of people.”
Minced oath, like Jeepers Creepers instead of using Jesus name in vain.
Confound it instead of g-damn it.
There are a lot if them.
Cotton pickin’ substitutes for nasty stuff.
From The Urban Dictionary...
Cotton-pickin' An adjective of Southern U.S. origin: Pain in the ass. Difficult. Bothersome. God-forsaken. Irritating. Frustrating. Crazy-making. Idiotic. Unbearable.
Originated as a descriptor for the labor of harvesting cotton crops. Later used to described the farm-workers, primarily african-american slaves, who harvested the crops. May be offensive, and perceived as derogatory or insulting, to any intelligent or enlightened audience if spoken aloud.
"Are you out of your cotton-pickin' mind?" "Assembling IKEA furniture is so cotton-pickin' hard if you don't follow the instructions." "My boss is such a cotton-pickin' fool.
Guess we're just not properly "intelligent or enlightened".
