Some Roman Catholics are not aware the priest used to slap the individual. There was a very lively debate on this a year or so ago IIRC.

Maybe he thought he was doing an old style confirmation. Nah, he thought he was doing an exorcism. Can't blame Priests for being confused nowadays, especially the old ones, considering what is currently the Pope.
