Watch: Video shows priest slap baby during baptism
Fox 8 ^ | 23 Jun 18 | Mattha Busby

A Reddit user posted video that shows a priest slapping a baby during a baptism.

The video, which was also posted on YouTube, has a French title that translates to “A priest slaps an infant during his baptism.”

At first, the 43-second video clip shows the priest, who is speaking French, attempting to comfort the crying baby.

But when the crying doesn’t stop, the priest slaps the baby in the face.

A man and woman, who appear to be the child’s parents, looked shocked by the slap.

The woman can be heard saying something to the priest before the man has to physically remove the baby from the priest’s arms.

The documentary series “The Keepers” was very eye opening.

At least he is not alone in his leaping.

This story was on many news feeds and wires over the weekend, including domestic and international sites. I believe it is not a reflection on the Catholic Church as a whole - only on this individual priest. Surely, the Catholic Church does not sanction his behavior, in fact, they are to be applauded for acting swiftly to deal with this situation. The priest in question is 89 years old. Clearly, the man should retire.

"Light in the loafers," "pro-abortion": face it: you don't know any such thing.

At the link: “It’s unclear when and where the video was taken.”

Also no names, neither the “parents” or the “priest."

I put those words in quotes, because when you don’t know when, where, or who it was, it’s not news. At best it’s malicious speculation. A cheap shot.

It’s a disgrace to post defamatory gossip like this. It's just an excuse to paint slime on huge groups as a whole, who you don't know anything about.

Not even their names.

In the Acts of the Apostles it reports consistently and repeatedly, that they baptized everyone in the household (Acts 10:47-48; 11:14; 16:15; 16:33).

This is a clear fulfillment of the Biblical parallel to circumcise all the males, as Abraham did to himself, his sons, and every male in his household, including infants.

Well, “spare the rod” and all that. Is this a baby or a two-year-old? I’ve seen both versions. It makes a difference. I’d have felt better about it if the priest had slapped the parents. This has turned into a wonderful propaganda chance for the Godless progressives.

Maybe he thought he was doing an old style confirmation.

Nah, he thought he was doing an exorcism. Can't blame Priests for being confused nowadays, especially the old ones, considering what is currently the Pope.

With RAMPANT molestation of young boys through the years by many priests, and the ardent efforts of the heirarchy to protect the perps from prosecution, hustling them off to other unsuspecting parishes, and do nothing to stop it; I think I’m not far from the bullseye.

How did you like Reply Number 2? I tend to agree with that, too.

It's moral defamation to spread slander against any person without compelling evidence.

It would be about as fair to say "You're American? With a toll of >60 million U.S. babies aborted since 1973, I think I'm not far from the bull's eye if I call you a mass murderer."

This is not against you personally. It's in illustration of a rabidly malicious generalization.

“Looking for his teeth”? Humanly speaking, that would be more understandable. People do sometimes react with anger.

It looks like the kid bit down on the priest’s thumb.

It’s also such a very short clip that I am pretty sure the rest of the ritual does not support the premise of the Guardian’s version or else they would have presented more of it or even the whole thing. Why is the press afraid to show the whole procedure to see if the child was roughly handled all along- if the child was, a longer video would have confirmed it and strengthened the story. Instead it’s very tightly clipped which makes me think it was clickbait edited for shock value. Are leftwing nuts afraid to let their readers hear the Word of God, or afraid that maybe everything was going great until this particular moment and might lessen the shock value? And why no names/dates/etc for confirmation?

There is a reason this is playing now - there’s a leftwing Catholic official I think in Ireland who has proposed making religious instruction of children “before the age of reason” a violation of children’s “human rights.” And things have gone hinky enough over there that the guy is not seen as radical.

As bad as the video is, while it certainly looks like the priest planted on upside the kid’s head, the kid could have bit the priest’s finger or thumb as he was cradling the face and the priest could have been trying to free his thumb, which might look like a slap with a shaky-handed 98 year old.

It could even have been staged, since there seems to be no ID and the background’s not distinctive enough to ID the church.

Or the rest of the video could show the priest’s state of mind, maybe he has Alzheimer’s and got confused when the kid was throwing a fit and did slap him, in which case he probably screwed up the ceremony too... and showing him mumbling and screwing up the ceremony would make people more sympathetic to both priest and child- the former for having succumbed to a horrible disease and the latter for having to experience the disease at the hands of the ill - and then public discourse would be about the suffering and collateral damage caused by Alzheimer’s which does not fit the paper’s agenda.

I know my Dad always loved animals, but because he’s fighting Alzheimer’s, he keeps stepping on my parrot’s tail when they’re both wandering around the house, and now the parrot gets a understandably nervous around him. Dad also doesn’t see well at all, and sometimes sticks his hands in the bird’s chest and face when walking by his stand - an act which would normally make the bird clamp down on a person’s finger in self defense. Fortunately the parrot seems to know it’s not intentional and he just squawks and tries to give Dad room by leaning way back on the perch or scrambling out of the way.

I think I’d rather see an interview of the parents and church officials than react to a video with no context.

A well-reasoned response.

Is that still allowed here?
