What should marijuana opponents do when their cause fails? A lesson from Prohibition
The Boston Globe ^ | June 23rd, 2018 | Stephanie Schorow

Some day soon, even as sweet, skunky smoke drifts in from the streets outside, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other staunch opponents of marijuana may draw inspiration from a true believer named Morris Sheppard. After the repeal of national Prohibition in 1933 and until his death in 1941, the Texas senator embraced a yearly custom. A progressive Democrat often considered “the father of Prohibition,” Sheppard would rise on the Senate floor to rail against alcohol and call for a repeal of Repeal.

“It was a ritual,” Daniel Okrent, author of the 2010 book “Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” explained in an interview. “Clearly he didn’t expect anything was going to happen. It was paying homage to his cause.”

Sheppard, a proponent of bank reform and an advocate of women’s suffrage, may have been the country’s most sincere Prohibitionist, but he ended up on the losing side of history. As such, he faced a dilemma that may soon become familiar to another group of prohibitionists: marijuana opponents. When society turns away from a cause, how long should its supporters fight on? After committing themselves to a lengthy, even decades-long struggle, how can they simply let it drop?

On July 1, Massachusetts will join states such as Colorado, Washington, and California, whose voters have chosen to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. The implementation of the law has been bumpy, not least because Sessions and the federal Justice Department still have the authority to crack down on cannabis use.

I saw recent medical research that indicates that people under 25 (children?) should NOT partake of pot since it changes their brain chemistry.

That's a law I would like to see the smokers alliance try to implement.

Pot use also seems to be at the forefront of a lot (all?) of homosexual grooming, and drug use in many forms takes place among the gaystapo. It positively kills adolescents that get caught in the trap.

Pulling out traffic stats from CALIFORNIA to "prove" that marijuana is safe

More of your straw men - Ken's point was that legalization of marijuana did not make CA traffic hazardous.

Those of us that have smoked pot and quit KNOW how dangerous and destructive it is.

I have smoked pot and quit, and I fully support its legalization for adults.

It's no secret...heck it's OBVIOUS...that as acceptability of pot increases morals, culture and ethics decreases. That's the goal.

Still feeling very sorry for you.

I don't feel sorry for you. I'm completely confident that God will straighten your mind out one day.

Fascinating how you go straight from health issues to "law." The proper function of government is not to protect adults from self-harming choices, but at most to make sure that sellers fully disclose harms of their product ... which can only effectively be done for a legal product.

Quite frankly, you’re grasping at a non-existent straw. For one, fedgov under Trump has not lifted a finger to interefere in state marijuana regulation. He has said not a word about VT in 2018 or the 4 states that legalized in 2016. President Trump has said multiple times during the campaign and as President that it should be up to the states. It is not a leftist position. It’s consistent with the Constitution. It’s PDJT’s position. It’s time to face that reality.

lol...talk about NOT facing reality:

From VOX:

The Trumps Administration's New War on Marijuana Explained

You talk like Donald Trump's slogan is "Make America the 70's Again".

It makes you wonder how many children have been molested in the name of the War on Drugs, doesn’t it?

LOL...oh...THIS is what you are considering molestation. Geesh. According to your definition all policeman have sexually molested every person they've ever patted down. Get a new schtick.

At last a positive albiet a backhanded one that presumes my mind isn’t right now when you’ve never met me. I forgive you for the fallacy.

I’m thankful Our Heavenly Father gave us the cannabis plant to use medicinally. I pray one day everyone who can benefit from cannabis will be able to safely & legally use it.

I didn't call you a leftist tool. I said you fit the textbook definition of a leftist tool. And you do. Your views on pot look like they're a cut and paste from every leftist pro-drug, anti-family, anti-police, pro-abortion, anti-USA, pro-lqbqtrsfvdr website out there.

You've told me you routinely smoke pot. The fact that you're in a marijuana induced haze all the time means exactly that your mind isn't right. It's constantly altered and influenced by the drug. It's not in your control or God's control.

But I'm 100% confident that God will take care of that.

Oh goodie, a prohibitionist is using a progressive rag as proof of something. Too funny.

The difference between authoritarian prohibitionists & progressive leftists is minimal at best. Just a different version of the equal outcome fallacy & “we know what’s best for you” BS, IMO.

“You’ve told me you routinely smoke pot.”

And as usual, you start off with a fallacy. I have never told you I routinely smoke pot. I have told you that I use cannabis daily. I abhor the taste of smoking cannabis & it is very harsh on my throat. I’ve posted this fact many times in these discussions so you can easily verify this.

“The fact that you’re in a marijuana induced haze all the time...”

Another fallacy of ignorance since you’ve never met me while I was medicated to know such a thing. It IS a lovely example of projection. So I must give you credit there.

“...means exactly that your mind isn’t right.”

Again, just another fallacy because you do not know me nor have you ever experienced my presence medicated or not to know the state of my mind in any fashion. It’s my experience that authoritarian prohibitionists use these tactics often just like progressives love to claim they “know” conservatives. Just a variation on a falsehood. Nothing more or less. This is why I continue to feel sorry for you.

“It’s not in your control or God’s control.”

This is the biggest LIE you’ve told in our discussions to date Neither you nor I have the power to restrict the control of God Almighty. Such arrogance is truly disturbing to read. It’s like Nancy Pelosi telling us abortion is ok because we have free will. Hardly conservative & definitely evil. I will continue to pray for you.

“But I’m 100% confident that God will take care of that.”

I’m 100% confident Our Heavenly Father led my friend to suggest to me to look into medical cannabis in early 2015. It makes perfect sense as my life had gone from misery to joy & I thank God in Heaven again for giving us the cannabis plant to use as medicine.

I pray for the day to soon come where you will understand there is nothing in existence that is beyond the Control of God Almighty.

Your God is marijuana. Plain and simple. Look, I'm not an idiot. I used to smoke pot. You're delusional because of pot. You're being deceived. You're being enslaved and being pulled away from God. God doesn't use pot to draw us near him. He uses the love of his son Jesus Christ.

“Your God is marijuana. “

More projection. I’m sorry my happiness & wellness because of cannabis makes you angry. For the record, I worship, God the Father, Son & Holy spirit. I fall short of God’s Glory daily but I am thankful He is a Merciful God & for the Hope of Salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord & Savior. You cannot limit Our Heavenly Father in any way on any day.

“Look, I’m not an idiot. I used to smoke pot. You’re delusional because of pot. “

Projection, pure & simple. You foist your experience upon me to validate that which you cannot or refuse to understand. A decent explanation to start your education away from arrogant hubris can start here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_projection

“Psychological projection is a theory in psychology in which humans defend themselves against their own unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others.”

“You’re delusional because of pot. You’re being deceived. “

LOL!!! More fallacy. I’ve been reborn. Saved from the misery of depression, anxiety & resulting insomnia by treating my symptoms with cannabis. Sorry you refuse to accept the reality you could never experience with cannabis. It’s not for everyone.

“You’re being enslaved and being pulled away from God.”

The fallacy continues. I’m not only a thankful cannabis patient but a thankful Catholic convert who delights in receiving the Body & Blood of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament & going to Confession. Also, I play bass every Sunday at the 10am Mass—the absolute most enjoyable gig I will ever have in my life because I get to play for Jesus. If you’re Catholic & ever in the Jacksonville, Florida area, Freep-mail me & I would gladly meet you after Mass at our parish & then you can learn about me 1st hand & see where your fallacies misled you.

One thing’s for sure, Genesis 1:29 isn’t going away & neither is the Truth about Jesus Christ our Lord.
