In the case of my aunt and uncle who were also hit head-on and killed on the highway, it was a case of someone who tried to commit suicide.
The guy started drinking, got on the highway, then crossed a grassy median and turned off his headlights. His tank of a van hit my aunt and uncle’s vehicle a couple of miles later. Airbags and safety belts were useless. They were killed and then burned in the explosion. He survived.
