Real ID in Alabama uses your drivers license as the document. A REAL ID enabled drivers license is all you need for domestic travel.

Waiting multiple hours to get a drivers license in California just shows how dysfunctional that state is.

Here in Ohio I’ve used several BMV (not DMV) offices in Beavercreek, Moriane, Lebanon, Mason, and Sharonville.

The longest wait, on a Saturday morning, with the office packed, may have been about an hour and a half.

A few weeks ago, I had to renew my son’s learners permit at the Lebanon office, and there was maybe a 10 minute wait at most on a Saturday afternoon.

Since I refuse to fly, air travel wasn’t an issue. But, possibly because we have 3 forms/levels of ID in NYS, I had other issues with my NYS drivers license being accepted. Nobody ever gives me a hassle if I use my passport.

If you mean the 3 levels of ID, that’s not bizarre at all. Sadly. NYS has lost almost half its House seats in the last 60 years. Albany, our capital, needs warm bodies and doesn’t care how it gets them. Hence the 3 levels, two of which won’t pass federal muster.

Really scary aspect: How many people, do you suppose, checked with security responsibilities are aware that there are 3 levels of NYS ID?

Two since illegals can get driver's licenses in California your current license is worthless as ID and you have to go get a "real ID". Thanks Jerry Brown.

I just got a "Real ID" in Massachusetts despite the state having been given a waiver until 2020.I decided to do it now because my license isn't due to expire until 2022 and if I didn't do it now I'd surely forget.

I would think that California would have gotten a waiver too...but I certainly could be wrong.

“Real ID” isn’t unique to Kalifornia, it is just one more bundle of joy from the DHS.

But that doesn’t mean Kalifornia didn’t find a unique way to **** up the process. They seem to be good at that.

I thought most all states let you renew by mail. The backwards Southern State I live in lets you.PA isn't exactly on the cutting edge of progress but you can renew on line...only reason to go to a DMV is for the picture-taking. Takes about 15 minutes every four years.

To get a "Real ID" one must present a birth certificate (or US Passport),your Social Security card, and two pieces of mail (telephone bill, gas bill, etc) to prove citizenship, your social security number and your actual residence.I believe that those are Federal requirements, not state.

Same in FL (at least where I live - Hobe Sound, FL) I just go to the local tax collector (DMV) in-out in 10-25 mins. Doesn’t matter what I am there for plus tag renewal is done online.

In Maryland it once took me four trips, at least none hours, 150-200 miles of driving to get the four trips to the “conveniently” located MVA offices just to get license plates for a 14 year old used car.

I complained enough, through my state senator that I got a call from their head of “customer service.”

I told her that she was a failure and her department was fatally broken. I told her that the last time I performed the same transaction in Michigan, the competent employees there had me in and out in ten minutes.

I told her that the people of Michigan rewarded their head of DMV by electing her as a US congresswoman and I’d be glad to make an appointment for her to tell the Maryland woman how to run a competent agency. Hot under the collar doesn’t even begin.

Maryland allows people to pay an agent to do the DMV dirty work for them. I finally gave up.

It takes me about 10 minutes in my Elmore County office.

Go first thing in the morning, around 8:00 am. Chances are you’ll be the first customer.

Don’t go at lunch, especially towards the end of the month, when plates expire.

“Here in Ohio I’ve used several BMV (not DMV) offices in Beavercreek, Moriane, Lebanon, Mason, and Sharonville....longest wait... about an hour and a half.”

I’ve also used Lebanon, Mason and Sharonville, found Lebanon shortest but furthest away for me. In Mason a couple of weeks ago, about 10 am and it was packed. Took a number and gaged the progress, left and ran errands for an hour and came back, talked to someone waiting to see about haw fast they were going and figured I had another hour. Left and ran more errands, walked in and saw my number was within a couple, sat down for just a couple of minutes and think I p****ed a few people off when I went to the counter what appeared to them out of turn. Why waste time, take a number and do other things when you know it will take a long time.

Can you get the CA real ID from the AAA?

Hmmm...that's a good one. Eh...the AAA can do NOTHING for getting a Driver's License but an ID..? Possible, but I'm dubious.

But anything else they can do; registration stuff, license plates... And the biggest wait I've ever had that way was...maybe 5 minutes, or even less.

The tow truck drivers are nice and they have a feature that lets smartphone people monitor the location of the responding driver in real time.

In the old days they'd also give out Trip Tik map packs for people going to the Yosemite, or Zion, or whatever.

I really used to love those.

Sounds like you have three types in NY but you pick which one meets your needs. If I were you I would have gotten a Real ID, put it in my wallet and been done with it.

Carrying around a passport every day? That’s sort of ridiculous ... and you don’t even fly. Good grief.

I thought most all states let you renew by mail.

I get notification of expiration of both drivers license and license plate tabs by mail but I can renew over the internet.

Interestingly enough, I had to renew both my drivers license and CPL last year. I had to show up in person at the county court house to renew the CPL and they had to take a photo for it. Then they used the same photo for the drivers license..........

Just an FYI, your state DMV has your license flagged if you have a CPL.........

The Massachusetts DMV is actually a pleasure these days——it used to be an absolute nightmare.

Same here in Connecticut and I believe they use the same system. It's been over a decade since I even set foot in a DMV office. Most transactions are handled online through a web portal. I think the only reason for going there is to have your picture taken and even that will soon be done online.

WA State DMV is excellent too, and this state is notorious for treating its citizens like vassals.

Apparently, they later cleaned up their act a bit, but, when I first moved to MA, the Registry of Motor Vehicles was universally referred to with a single word:

..."THEDAMNEDREGISTRY"...

Auburn last year was a fluke. Around where I live the half LSU half Alabama front plates are popular. A house divided. The couple next door to me fit in that category.
