The NFL can get away with its behavior because it is an absolute monopoly. Even near monopolies like airlines, credit card companies, and cable companies don’t insult their customers. Companies in highly competitive sectors, like retail, absolutely cannot insult their customers. The customer will switch to a competitor instantly and let their friends know about it.

I think I agree with you. IMO, the NFL’s decline began when they started trying to jazz things up and be more than football. Cheerleaders, the stupid breast cancer awareness month with everyone wearing pink, gal announcers on the sidelines, football players forced to serve able-bodied people Thanksgiving meals as a form of “giving back”, and all the other causes and foundations they promote and support. It’s football, not a social services agency.
