IIRC, several decades ago there was a math Phd candidate who was repeatedly denied his degree by a professor. The candidate cracked the prof’s head open multiple times with a hammer then went out for an evening of pizza and beer before turning himself into the police.

Ah, that'd be our boy Theodore Streleski, a fellow whose history I related to a couple of friends who were PhD candidates until just recently. (One made it, one is pending). Teddy defended his hammer murder of his professor as "logically necessary" - he was a math major - and, as one of my friends remarked, who can argue with that?

10 Year’s after my father got his PhD., he and a fellow student sued their advisor for plagiarism. The guy had been stealing other people’s work for years.
