When I was in Moscow in 1972, a brand of beer called Moskovskoye (Muscovite) was ubiquitous. It came in a 12-ounce bottle and was never served cold. It was also one of the worst-tasting beers I had ever drunk.

Some of the better watering holes would serve Stella beer, an Egyptian brand. Egypt, with no oil or raw materials, was apparently exporting beer to the Soviet Union to pay for the Soviet armaments that it was receiving--and that it would later use when it attacked Israel in 1973. Nonetheless, Stella tasted far better than Moskovskoye.
