A joint committee from House Ove rsight and House Judiciary are conducting a hearing today at 10:00am EDT with DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Unlike the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday the House team has representatives far more knowledgeable of the issues. Hopefully, expertise will deliver better questions.

Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte has direct primary oversight authority over the DOJ. Chairman Trey Gowdy comes from the aggregate Oversight/Reform Committee. Far more House members have read the 568-page IG report. Due to a better informed group of members we are more optimistic for detailed, specific, confrontational and challenging questions to draw out the key issues. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

I love listening to Gowdy methodically unravel the so called, “no political bias” statements within Horowitz's report. It's just entertaining.

Horowitz was at one point smiling and kinda acting as if he and Gowdy were in lock step...until, Gowdy put it in 3rd gear. The lil giddy smile on Horowitz's face went stone cold.

I understand the frustration, but Horowitz’ job is to be like Joe Friday from Dragnet - “just the facts ma’am”. Now that this documented record of facts has been put on the table it’s up to others to implement corrective actions (the least part of it) and to determine if crimes have been committed and whether a case can be made against those who are responsible.

We all need to relax and listen, absorb what is being said and think about what it means, so that as subsequent actions unroll we will understand the whole story.

What specific penalties or consequences will result from today's hearings? Congress has the power of the purse but I can guarantee you that not one dime will be withheld from any of these agency's budgets in the future. Moreover, there will be no real accountability for mismangement, lying or bias.

The hearings are the usual charade designed to mollify the public and lend the appearance of doing something. Just more political theater instead of meaningful and tangible consequences. Congress puts on show trials for political reasons. That's all they do.
