Well and truly said.
In other words, they were legitimately elected, but were derelict in their duty.
St. Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the Church, finally got the pope to come back to Rome. But after that, the Church got 40 years of something worse: "dueling" conclaves, with different groups of Cardinals claiming to have elected the legitimate pope, resulting in a schismatic scramble for 40 years when two, and sometimes three men claiming the papacy at the same time.
So you see, the Church has been in a mell of a hess before, but --- thanks to the Holy Spirit--- survived it.
