Well, ‘cept for one niggling detail on th BC. Pretty dang sure in 1961 his dad’s race would have said “Negro”. No way would it have had “African” on it. That’s what I recall seeing way back. But we’re way past that now.

Except that his official dad actually was from Africa. I could see somebody making a distinction.

The Hawaii DOH said they accept whatever the parents put down as their race.

In the 1962 Kenya census one of the racial categories was “African”.

A 1961 US Government manual said for the race of parents on birth certificates if the parent is colored and born in the US use the designation “Negro” but if the parent was not born in the US use the designation “other nonwhite”.
