Watergate prosecutor says Manafort may never again 'see the outside of a jail cell'

Former Watergate prosecutor Nick Akerman said on Friday that Paul Manafort may never again “see the outside of a jail cell” after his house arrest arrangement was revoked on Friday.

Manafort appeared in court after special counsel Robert Mueller asked a judge to revoke his pretrial release conditions, accusing him of attempting to tamper with potential witnesses.

During the hearing, the judge revoked Manafort's bail and ordered him to jail.

“Just to put this in historical perspective, what broke the Watergate case was when James McCord got a 25-year sentence,” Akerman said when asked about the hearing while appearing on MSNBC’s “Velshi & Ruhle." “He was one of the Watergate burglars. He got a 25-year sentence. He was sitting in jail because that’s what made him crack and cooperate.”

But Akerman noted that the former Trump campaign chairman, who is 69 years old, could soon be facing life in jail.

“And here it could be even worse,” Akerman said. “It could be the beginning of a life sentence. Paul Manafort, if he does not cooperate, may never ever see the outside of a jail cell.”

Mueller filed a superseding indictment against Manafort earlier, accusing him of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

So this is an admission he is being pressured to cooperate.

That is exactly what this sounds like. Open public blackmail. They got him on nothing, so they invent obstruction and tampering claims. This whole thing reeks.

Under these circumstances, if he testifies against Trump I don’t think that any jury in America would believe a word Manafort says.

I don’t believe that. Even Blago will be getting out eventually.

Blago was TRIED and CONVICTED by a jury and SENTENCED by a judge.

NONE of this has happened (yet) with Manafort.

I guess there’s no trial. Just jail.

That happens when you violate the terms of your bail.

How long before Trump decides on pardoning Blago?

He won't pardon Blago. He may commute his sentence.

What’s being done to Manafort can happen to any American deemed “inconvenient.”

Most here won't even remember the Bundy family held for 2 years without bail with praise of Sessions.

Well, Ken Starr is a scumbag.

The original McGoo. What he was has become apparent in recent history.

Hollywood moguls could probably get Manafort sprung real quick if they decided backing him playing Lee Child’s Jack Reacher would stampede the box offices. He’d be a dead ringer for the part, light years ahead of stupid little Tommy Cruise. Stranger things have happened.

Is Mueller simply baiting Trump to fire him?

To me, Mueller, like gangster thugs, is attacking Manafort to taunt Trump. Mueller has used that tactic time and again.

Corrupt GOPe and Democrats are behind this attempt to unseat a duly-elected sitting President.

Trump is seen as letting his people be abused by Sessions and Mueller while letting Hitlery and Obama and their criminal associates go free.

Yep.

He is letting corruption run rampant in his administration, and it is affecting lives.

You have some Swamp Critters to deal with, Mr. Trump, so I suggest you get to dealing.

Cooperate with Trumped-up charges, if you will.

Yet, it is probably worth recognizing that this guy seems to have been a longtime part of the swamp. Apparently he was getting away with it until the 2016 campaign, but it doesn’t sound like he was a boy scout along the way.

Still, I’d expect Trump to pardon him before leaving office.

What’s the difference between pardoning and commuting the sentence? The result of leaving imprisonment is the same, right? I guess to pardon, would remove that offense from someone’s official criminal record.

Remember Hillary according to Trump, Hillary is “A good person, that suffered enough”. How is that appeasement working out for ya, Donald.
