Pre-Great Society
The Great Society (also known as the War on Poverty) is a set of programs instituted by President Lyndon B. Johnson and its associated legislation passed by Congress in an effort to combat poverty. It was criticized extensively by conservatives because it expanded the welfare system and increased citizen dependency on the government. (conservapedia)
I disagree that it was created to combat poverty. I say it was created to grab about 13 million newly minted voters (see 24th amendment) and turn them into reliable Democrat voting robots.
