That’s an interesting question.

Based on my 25 years as a newspaper reporter/editor, I would avoid “potty mouth” in breaking news copy. “Foul mouth” gets the job done without sounding cute. Especially in writing headlines, you are always looking for the perfect word.

In casual conversation, “potty mouth” has its uses. Also, I remember one high school acquaintance who was fond of “toilet tongue.” That expression never seems to have taken off, although it certainly gets the same point across.
