Hoping to kill a lure for illegal immigrants, top Trump administration officials are rallying behind the E-Verify system that requires employers to hire only legal U.S. workers or face a fine.

The heads of the Social Security Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have endorsed the mandatory national use of the voluntary system as a way to curb illegal immigration and cut identity theft.

“I think that we need to look at E-Verify. I think E-Verify is a necessary tool because illegal employment is a magnet that pulls people into this country. So I think E-Verify should be mandated in this country across the board,” said ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan.

So if E verify can identify illegals why would you not favor that?

IMO, an employer has a moral duty to know.

I agree. But as far as I’m concerned, if a person shows you ID and a valid SSN, you’ve done due diligence.

and yet requiring employers to use e-verify to avoid hiring illegal alien workers IS “fascism”?

I’m soft on that one.

That is complicated by our knowledge of millions of illegal aliens using stolen SSNs.

Yes. But it’s not the employer’s job to police the validity of SSN’s used.

In fact, I compare it to a bar that checks for ID. It is not their job to ensure that every out of state (or in state, for that matter) driver’s license used for ID is not a forgery. For me, it is their responsibility to accept as authentic anything a reasonable person would accept as authentic.

But I have to admit that if all you give them is a written down SSN, there should be a simple way to verify that the SSN at least belongs to a person with the name you are using.

I think that if somebody who looks 12 presents an ID showing an age of 40, the police expect the employee to catch that.

If I were a bar owner, I know I would expect it.

Most employers of illegal aliens know dern good and well what they’re doing.

So, you're okay with enabling illegals to use stolen IDs to take jobs. I use E-Verify all the time to check out our employees. I require a photo ID and a Social Security card for proof of the new hire's identity. Why do you object to that?

I’m soft on it. It’s a fringe issue for me regarding freedom and state control.
