I suspect this is the opening of a discussion with Russia that may result in them leaving Crimea....another fix of Obama’s numerous messes. Putting some bail out there early.
*bait*
Not Britishswearword likely. The Crimea was part of Russia since the time of Catherine the Great. Kruschev transferred administrative control to the Ukraine, but after the breakup of the Soviet Union, it has been a bit of an issue. The Crimea provides Russia access to warmwater ports on the Baltic and Russia is about as likely to part with those ports as we are to part with the ports of the greater Los Angeles area.
Trump is smart enough not to try to bargain over the unbargainable. I believe it is, always was and always will be a non-starter.
I suspect this is the opening of a discussion with Russia that may result in them leaving Crimea...
Russia won’t leave Crimea. They just finished the bridge that was first planned by the Czar. They are more likely to give the Kuril Islands back to Japan than they are to give up Crimea.
“I suspect this is the opening of a discussion with Russia that may result in them leaving Crimea”
Keep dreaming.
I agree with you Judy. Putin won’t ever surrender Crimea...but a) the takeover would not have happened under a Trump presidency and b) the move will one day be looked at as a big mistake for Putin...
For the time being, the collapse of his regime is not imminent — but he got the island and lost Ukraine. A country where many once supported him. Now, Ukraine is taking baby steps to join NATO among a whole host of other things to cement their indepence from Russia’s sphere of influence.
Most importantly, the consequences of Crimea stalled Russia’s own economic and domestic development.
