A few weeks ago I applied for one of those advanced driver's licenses which,in a year or two, will be required to get on an airplane (even domestic flights) and to enter Federal buildings and military bases.

To get it I was required to present a US passport or US birth certificate,my Social Security card (*not* laminated),a current driver's license or state ID and two pieces of mail from banks, the government, etc.

And yet it's somehow terrible for a Census official to ask a person if he/she is a US citizen?

And Heaven forbid, you should want to vote. You don’t even need to provide an 18th birthday card.

OK.What's the big deal of whether a Social Security card is laminated or not?
What am I missing?

My origina SS card was cheap government cardboard, and wouldn't last a year in regular use.
What's the point of having one if you are not expected to use it?
