June 1st has come and passed. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. Under Arizona law, if John McCain had vacated office before June 1st ("vacated" meaning "died"), there would be a special election in November to replace him. But having passed this June deadline, if McCain resigns he can be replaced by an appointee of the governor of Arizona, Doug Ducey, a conservative Republican, and this appointee will serve until 2020.
The problem is, McCain hasn't resigned.
McCain has been so ill that he hasn't been seen in the Senate for months. He has missed countless votes. Arizona is without half its representation in the Senate, and that's only if you count Jeff Flake.
So why hasn't McCain resigned?
The answer is unclear, but may boil down to one word: Cindy.
McCain wants his wife, Cindy McCain to take his place. McCain may feel that he is royalty and his Senate seat is like a throne that can be passed down to relatives.
One source close to the McCain family said supporters of the senator have quietly let Gov. Ducey know Cindy is the choice of "Team McCain."
My guess is that Ducey doesn't want to appoint Cindy, and without a guarantee that Cindy will be appointed, that McCain is refusing to resign. Out of spite he's leaving the people of Arizona without full representation in the Senate. In a tight 51-49 GOP controlled body, the absence of one Senator is critical on many votes.
But McCain apparently does not care.

Don’t cry for me, Arizona...
McLame playing the MaverPrick to the end. With that said however we wish him comfort, peace and clinging to Jesus in his journey exiting the planet soon.
May the end come sooner than later for this selfish SOB.
He’s still wheeling and dealing about who should take the seat. Instead of reading the Bible, praying, confessing and preparing for the fast-approaching inevitable.
With due apologies to Monty Python:
E shouldnt resign.
E should pass on.
This senator is no more!
He has long since ceased to be.
He should expire and meet his maker.
Pray for Arizona and for the US to have a patriotic and Constitutional Senate soon.
A real man would have resigned long ago but even considering the politics of waiting till May 31st; he has proven he was never real man. Just another GOPe RINO. I hope all his sins against America are brought out into the light one day for all to see.
There’s something seriously wrong that he’s allowed to basically make it so Arizona only has one Senator right now. When’s the last time John McCain voted on anything or was even in D.C.?
The corrupt ones never go willingly.
Didn’t Blagojevich go to prison for trying to “sell” a senate seat. If I was Governor I would want no part of any deal with McCain.
Actually, there is something somewhat more colorful I’d like to tell Johnny McSwamp.
Is McCain not voting a bad thing?
John McCain please Resign or DIE!!
done.
The lack of term limits is one of the many fatal flaws in the Constitution.
Coupled along with the 17th Amendment, Federalism is dead, and we work for the WASHINGTONIANS, they don’t work for us.
They are 100% UNACCOUNTABLE and violate the law with impunity, stealing 4 trillion dollars from taxpayers every year in the process.
The election of Trump is the final proof that we are all slaves, and only use of the military can achieve real change.
Time is running out.
He’s going out feet first.
He cannot resign as he is likely too sick and incompetent to do so. Wonder if he has ceded power of attorney for affairs? Maybe that person would do so for him. Embarrassing that he did not resign with dignity when he had the chance. Now he embarrasses himself and further undermines his reputation.
There is the bitter prick John McCain, then the class act of Charles Krauthammer.
“he hasn’t been seen in the Senate for months”
Serious question, has Juan been seen ANYWHERE?
The Senate COULD simply declare the seat to be vacant with a resolution. Just as they did with the seceding states during the War of Northern Aggression.
