Would = wound
Too funny - we have so many here that “speak for all of us”....
You and your seven buddies can sit in that corner, and I’ll sit in this corner with the rest of the country.
It is clear the vast majority of Americans do not want to send more troops to Europe, and do not want to expand NATO in any way.
Those that desire that course are SOL.
Details and context - I am ambivalent about whether to set up shop in a friendly Poland that worries about Putin and company - but there is no one-size-fits-all solution or set of options. I served in several overseas locations and those were the fun and interesting assignments - why deny some American troops the opportunity to actually have enjoyable tours of duty?
One European country worth defending.
And you think that will come even close to the cost of relocating and basing an armored division from the U.S.?
If you want to talk "cost," there are still victims of the Nazi Holocaust and Soviet Occupation living today. Considering what those many millions of innocent victims had to pay, the lingering aftereffects on their families and society, and the bullying the Polish state continues to endure especially from Russia. No, a base is a small price to pay.
When you consider things like our inexcusable trade deficit with China, I would rather our resources go to such worthy causes as cementing our alliances with genuine friends.
Are you ok with the US millitary being mercenaries?
Let Polish blood defend Polish soil. NOT OUR PROBLEM.
Sad to see so many people on this forum being A-OK with US soldiers being used as mercenaries.
But not only being mercenaries, but intentionally picking a fight with Russia at the very same time.
Having been familiar with the region and the dynamics of that part of the world in person, I do think a US base would serve a good purpose there now. It may be time to reshuffle, downsize, and shift troops who are serving elsewhere.
If you’re going to hate on Poland and diminish other victims of Russia’s occupation legacy, then you sure better be critical of this nonsense behavior coming out from the Kremlin. It’s them that can’t get over the past and forcing places like Poland back to their heinous orbit.
Here is Kremlin behaving like crybabies over communist statues being removed. Doesn’t even scratch the surface:
Against sending American soldiers to protect Poland when Poland should do it = hating on Poland.
This is a leftist technique.
Poland is tiny compared to what it is up against. The gesture makes an important statement that mere self-defense alone cannot do.
And I won’t fall for the Putin-blinder tactics so unusually prevalent on these boards. Rather disturbing.
If you want to go to war against Russia, be my guest.
I don’t understand this obsession with using our troops as mercenaries.
If you spend any meaningful time in that part of the world, you would know the only country interested in war is Russia.
They are the nosy, noisiest neighbor not just militarily with their MASSIVE attention-whoring nuclear mock drills right on borders, but in wreaking cyberspace havoc also, and yes political meddling/pestering their neighbors is a fact!
Putin has a vested interest in keeping WWIII prospects alive, mainly to distract his people from their stalled domestic progress and his government’s rampant corruption. His country has mastered the art of hacking and bombing, but the art of free government and economics? No. Not so much.
Putting a base up is not starting war. It’s like building a tall fence or an alarm system to get your loud, psychologically unstable neighbor to shut up and stay inside.
A guard dog.
And sometimes it requires a neighborhood effort*
Let’s put some numbers up for lazy readers to get a sense of proportion of the countries mentioned.
Estonia.........1,315,819
Latvia..........1,990,300
Lithuania.......2,944,459

Recall the Russian diatribe about the “revanchist” threat the tiny Baltic states presented to the territorial integrity of Russia?
For scale reference as compared to the 3 Baltic states:
New York City. 7.341 million (1994)
Why is it our job to pay it?
When you consider things like our inexcusable trade deficit with China, I would rather our resources go to such worthy causes as cementing our alliances with genuine friends.
I'm sure Poland can defend itself.
