Details are set forth in the School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, released May 30, 2018.
Abbotts plan also focuses on the use of retired police officers and 'employing veterans' to serve as armed patrols in Texas schools:
Texas public schools are permitted to hire any person who is a licensed peace officer to provide campus security. Texas retired and off-duty peace officers already have extensive firearms and emergency response training, and many would be willing and able to protect Texas campuses. Texas should authorize schools to prioritize recruitment and hiring of such personnel to protect their campuses and their student bodies, faculty, employees, and guests. Hiring should prioritize individuals with the most applicable skill sets (i.e., former police, sheriffs, and constables). In addition, the state should create a pathway for our veterans many of whom have extensive firearm training to help protect our schools through a modified school marshal program that ensures they have the appropriate training to transition their expertise into the campus environment. Veterans who complete tailored training and background checks should have the ability to once again serve their communities in times of need.

Good on Gov Abbott !!
Pshaww! We know ALL veterans suffer from ptsd. Or so the left will claim.
Excellent!!
I don’t like a plan that results in only a few clearly identified armed people. They should be supplemented by concealed carriers so that a would be shooter doesn’t have a reasonable expectation of finding a room full of unarmed victims.
But school boards in Texas are already allowed to have teachers and staff armed after appropriate screening and trainng. It's already happening in more than 100 school districts in Texas, but of course it is almost exclusively rural school districts where police response time and abilities are very limited.
The Gun Free Zone notion is an utter failure. Make school boards actaully responsible for the safety of their atudents and insist they use every resouce possible to get it done now. Many teachers and support staff in rural America are already CCW holders and one of five school staff in a recent national poll were willing. Are the states and school boards willing to act? Likely not in DemonRat controlled cities and states.
Speaking my language!
And these guys/gals likely won’t be half-stepping around polytiks and wait-fer-backup bs!
Nobody talks much about metal detectors and single entry points...I wonder why ?
Likely not in DemonRat controlled cities and states
People are so invested in the Rats how will they break free?
And the evil of the Rats who take advantage of this situation is pissing me off.
The end result in disarming us to enslave us, you cannot get that message through to the indoctrinated. I have two phds in my family under 30 and they are so dumb when it comes to this.....
Just veterans, huh? What about the thousands of other parents?
You don’t need to plan anything if you just let folks carry as they will.
That’s a job and responsibility I’d take on.
Too bad I live in NY.
Retired and vets should get together within their communities and go to city council meetings and tell them this is what you want for your community. If they say they don't have funding then be prepared to show them their frivolous spending projects.....and which is more important to the community.
When Texas solves this problem they will create the model for the rest of the country.
I prefer veterans..they are already experienced and have the ‘eyes’ and senses to watch for trouble. This would also employ them after service which is a great thing for all. Plus there would be enough to do the job.
Such a great idea.....and I love the fact of employing our vets and retirees..super great idea!
I’m certain those details have and are being considered.
