Uh, no. French was well in the mix in that time frame. The territory that became the "Louisiana Purchase" and just about doubled the size of the United States was French.

That said, ENGLISH is and should be the official legal language of the US, and if you plan to live here, you need to speak it.

Uh, yes.

Your confusing territory with inhabited. Back then, many countries claimed territory it never occupied.

Let’s see:

English
Spanish
French
Italian
German
Portuguese
Dutch
Irish and Scottish Gaelic

And believe it or not Russian, spoken mostly in Northern California, where the Russians controlled Yuge parts of.

All other native languages were distinctly different, with no collective language to unify under from sea to shining sea...
