Never got into auto racing but one time back in the 1980s, I went to a NASCAR race in California while I was in the Marines. There was an extra ticket and I was invited to go.

I must say, it opened my eyes. I now understand the appeal. Seeing a live car race is nothing like on TV - my senses were on overload with all the noise and smell of motor oil. Not to mention the smell of grilled meats from the concessions. I had a lot of hot dogs and beer. I was also close enough to the action where there was a real danger of flying debris from wrecks but I understand NASCAR has never had a spectator death but they have had spectators injured so you had to pay attention.

It was a fun time.
