House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said during a town hall meeting on CNN on Wednesday night that when there is a Democratic president the federal deficit goes down.
Its counterintuitive in peoples minds that the Democrats are the deficit reduction folks, said Pelosi. But the fact is, you look, when theres a Democratic president, that the deficit goes down, when the Republicans are in power, they give tax cuts at the high end, all kinds of other things, and the deficit, the debt, the national debt goes up.
The historical data published by the White House Office of Management and Budget indicates that the three highest annual deficits in the years after World War II (measured as a percentage of GDP) were during the Obama administration.
In fiscal 2010, the federal deficit was 9.8 percent of GDP; in 2011, it was 8.7 percent; and in 2012, it was 8.5 percent.
In fiscal 2017, it was 3.5 percent.

It’s sad to see dementia take hold.
Wasn’t it the Democrats and Obama who threatened to shut down the government if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised?
The highest deficits ever were in the two years Pelosi was Speaker and Obama was President.
More alternative facts from the Cool Party.
Could someone buy this moron a bigger bong and a truck load of Cheetos?
What the h##l is she smoking? And how stupid does she think her audience is that they would believe that?
Also in the Obama years, they said Obama could ignore the debt ceiling based in the 14th amendment. That amendment has language indicating that the government will pay all debts, or something along those lines. We never got to test out that theory, but at one time they said the 14th amendment would override any debt ceiling legislation.
She must have failed math.
I can agree with that somewhat. Dems do it by kicking the can down the road and mortgaging our future.
Clearly, . This woman never made it past 3rd grade.
Who says that countries with low growth, poverty, and confiscatory taxes can’t have balanced budgets?
Wrong, fool. When there’s a GOP Congress, there’s less spending.
She’s totally lost it
She meant to say counterfactual.
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.I wonder if Obama was expecting to suppress insurection or rebellion, given the hate he was stirring up. This clause, however, is interesting:
But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.It could be construed that the debt Obama and his friends in Congress incurred was in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, in many respects. Hmm.
Great to see that lowering the deficit is now a priority for the Rats.
When there’s a Democrat Congress it always goes up.
Pelosi neglects that fact.
In 2006 the Democrats managed to convince the public that they would be less spendthrift than the Republicans had been.
Then that very bunch led by that same hag showed everyone what REAL spendthrift was like.
They are always eager to spend, it buys them votes and the Republicans get blamed. Their own base will rant about how not enough was spent.
Pelosi will say a half truth: Republicans DO spend to much, and they abandon their promises because they think their job is to be statesmen and get along with Democrats rather than do what the promised they would do.
But, to paraphrase Carlin, voting for Democrats because Republicans spend too much is like having sex in the name of virginity.
It was weeping Boehner who declared he was not going to change Nancy's rules.
