A Republican candidate in Georgias gubernatorial race who ran a Deportation Bus Tour to the states "sanctuary cities" was defeated in the GOP primary Tuesday night.
State Sen. Michael Williams, who skipped out on running for reelection for his state seat in order to mount a gubernatorial bid, earned about 5 percent of the vote in the primary, according to The Associated Press.
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp came out on top out of the seven candidates competing in the GOP primary on Tuesday. The two men will advance to a July runoff for the Republican nomination.
Williams, a former co-chair of President Trumps campaign in Georgia, gained national attention for his Deportation Bus, which he said he would use to find and house undocumented immigrants to send them back to where they came from.
Were not just going to track them and watch them roam around our state, Williams said in a commercial announcing the tour. Were going to put them on this bus and send em home.
He faced a hiccup when the bus broke down at the start of the tour, but it was quickly repaired and continued on the journey.
Williams had faced low poll numbers throughout the race, with a University of Georgia poll finding that only about 3 percent of voters said they supported the candidate.
He had positioned himself as a staunch opponent of sanctuary cities, or jurisdictions that dont cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
The bus isnt why he lost.
All of the other candidates had similar messages.
The Conservative candidate lost here in PA too because the turnout for these primaries is PATHETIC!
Only 17 Republicans showed up in my precinct. In that environment the establishment endorsed candidate almost always wins.
Generally speaking to win in Georgia on the Republican side you have to have name recognition. It is very hard for an unknown to get traction here as so many people just don’t pay attention until the end and then vote for names they know or have heard about. Unless the candidate makes a really stupid mistake (remember I am talking Republicans as all of our Democrats are totally stupid) then the well known candidate is going to win every time.
Jeb! in 2020! Anyone? ANYONE?
It was Kemp who said he had a big truck and would round them up himself, right? Substantially the same message and he advanced, so I fail to see the point the article is trying tocmake.
Jeb wasn’t supposed to lose so early in 2016.
He was supposed to lose to Hillary.
Concur. My guy was Hill. Came in third.
Oh you know.....anti-immigrant, biased, prejudiced, etc....all the usual Lefty talking points.
We voted for Williams.
Now, will the GA GOP be United by November? Or well Georgia get a black female as gov?
Yes he will have to run several more times then probably run for a different empty office before ever winning anything.
